Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier has admitted Cole Palmer's quality has left "surprised" after training with the Chelsea star for the first time.

The pair are currently on international duty with England ahead of the Three Lions' upcoming friendlies against Bosnia and Iceland, which will be the final two games played by Gareth Southgate's side prior to the European Championships.

Palmer was named in Gareth Southgate's provisional squad for the tournament in Germany and is likely to be named in the final 26-man squad, which must be confirmed by June 7.

Making a positive impression in the latest England camp, Palmer's class has left Trippier stunned for all the right reasons. Explaining why this was the case, the Newcastle right-back told talkSPORT: “It’s the first time I’ve trained with Cole, he’s really surprised me — a top-quality player.

“It’s just how he finds the pockets [of space]. His awareness for where other people are and how clever he is for such a young age. It’s the first time I’ve trained with him this week, I am really happy that I’ve trained with him, he’s been quality.”

Trippier is not the only to have been taken aback by the skill of the 22-year-old, with former Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas sharing a similar stance.

"I remember I was doing the Champions League final last summer. He was just warming up there, being one of these young players coming up, enjoying the experience, not being basically selected or looked at to feature in the game," the Spaniard told BBC Sport.

"And then all of a sudden - a big move to Chelsea. He starts performing at a very high level with a lot of quality and personality. He wants the ball, he makes things happen - the final pass, he scores goals.

"I was a little bit surprised by the move to Chelsea. I have to say I've been very impressed. I didn't expect this type of impact and he has been the player of the year without any doubt for Chelsea."

Palmer was named Chelsea Player of the Year and the PFA Young Player of the Year after a season in which he scored 27 times while also providing 15 assists for his team-mates.
