'I didn't want to go anywhere else' - Santos on his new deal at Wanderers

WANDERERS captain Ricardo Santos insists he “didn’t want go anywhere else” after signing a new three-year deal at the UniBol.

The defender had 12 months left on his previous deal and had been linked with a move to the Championship.

But Santos believes the Whites are heading in the right direction and wants to be part of the journey.

“I am happy to get it all done and I am delighted to sign a new contract. I can’t wait for next season,” he told the club’s YouTube channel.

“I have got a young family now and I always wanted to be here, I told the gaffer I didn’t want to go anywhere else.

“The gaffer believes in me. The club is going places and I just want to go on that journey with them. We got it done quickly to be fair, it probably took two weeks.”

Wanderers finished ninth in League One last term and were one of the form teams in the division since the turn of the year.

Santos feels there were positive signs from the Whites’ return to the third tier and is setting his sights high for next season.

He added: “Last year was our first time trying in League One, I think it was a decent season. Next season, we just want to get promoted.

“I think I am progressing slowly, I am improving every day. The gaffer helps me a lot and I just want to take it step-by-step and hopefully get to where I want to be with the club.

“The gaffer has got a good team here, he has got the people he wants and it looks exciting. I can’t wait for next season.

“Next season, we have just got to start fast. We had a little blip last season where we lost a few games, but we weren’t far away and next season we are going to give it a right go.”

The 26-year-old missed the final games of last season after suffering a hamstring injury during a 1-1 draw with Portsmouth.

When asked about his fitness, Santos said: “I had a few scans yesterday and it is all clear now, so I will be ready for the first day of pre-season.”
