The football world is in mourning following the death of one of the game’s greatest ever players, Diego Maradona, on Wednesday.
The Argentine hero passed away at the age of 60 after suffering a heart-attack, prompting tributes from the game’s biggest stars, including Pele, Lionel Messi and David Beckham.
Already, social media has been awash with fans and players alike sharing their favourite Maradona memories, from the sublime to the outrageous, encapsulated in a single game at the 1986 World Cup, when his infamous ‘Hand of God’ goal and arguably the greatest individual goal of all-time came within minutes of each other to knock England out of the tournament.
Leading his nation to glory at that tournament was perhaps the high in a career full of them, though there were also some almighty lows.
After leaving his native Argentina, where he had won the league title with Boca Juniors, Maradona enjoyed brief success at Barcelona before joining Napoli, where he became a hero that the locals would forever take into their hearts, proving the inspiration for two Scudetto wins.
Maradona playing career also took him to Sevilla before he returned to Argentina, while in management there were jobs in places as far-flung as Mexico and the UAE, as well as a memorable spell in charge of his own national side.
