Dillian Whyte vs Jermaine Franklin LIVE: Stream, latest updates and fight result tonight

Dillian Whyte was a majority-decision winner against Jermaine Franklin in a heavyweight main event at London’s Wembley Arena on Saturday tonight.

In April, just a matter of metres away from this evening’s venue, Whyte suffered a heartbreaking knockout loss to Tyson Fury at Wembley Stadium, failing to dethrone the WBC champion in front of 94,000 fans. Here, Whyte, 34, looked to bounce back, as the Briton took on unbeaten American Franklin.

By the end of the evening, Franklin was no longer undefeated, but a weary Whyte had also failed to bounce back with the spring that he would have hoped for. Whyte was declared a 116-112 winner on two of the judges’ scorecards, while the other read 115-115. The Briton found early success with vicious hooks to the body of Franklin, but the 29-year-old did well to fire back each time Whyte seemed to be building momentum.

It made for a dramatic conclusion to the fight, with the winner apparently up in the air. Whyte landed a huge left hook to send Franklin tumbling onto the ropes in the final seconds of the last round, but still Franklin retaliated with focused shots. Ultimately, however, the American suffered a first professional defeat as Whyte’s hand was raised, setting up a potential rematch with Anthony Joshua, who was sat ringside.

Thanks for following our live coverage of tonight’s fights!

“Maybe it was the urge to banish the ghost of Wembley, maybe it was the lure of another shot at Anthony Joshua and at redemption, or maybe it is just the way Dillian Whyte was designed. Maybe it just doesn’t matter. Somehow, some way, he found a path past Jermaine Franklin, even if the British heavyweight at times stumbled and sighed down that that road on Saturday night.

“In April, Tyson Fury took Whyte’s dream of becoming world champion, crumpled it up, and tossed it out of Wembley Stadium. Perhaps it clipped the famous arch on the way up, before it cascaded to the entrance of Wembley Arena, where Whyte was tasked with saving that dream on Saturday evening.

“And it is still in tact, straightened out but wrinkled; worse for wear but in Whyte’s hands once more.”

It was a strange fight, one that ebbed and flowed from one fighter’s grasp into the other’s, and one that had slower and more engaging moments.

It certainly ended in memorable fashion!

We go to the judges’ scorecards...

Round 12

Final round! This one could be close if it goes to the judges’ scorecards...

Franklin slaps a left hook onto Whyte’s midriff. Whyte sneaks an uppercut through Franklin’s guard, before the American fires back with an extended combination.

Another uppercut is on-target for Whyte. A left hook connects for Franklin.

Both heavyweights look tired. A right overhand and left hook land for Whyte! Now Franklin retaliates energetically!

A HUGE left hook sends Franklin tumbling backwards onto the ropes, but he won’t go down! THE BUZZER SOUNDS!

WHAT A FINISH!

Round 11

Two rounds to go. Short hooks land for Franklin off both wings. Good head movement from Whyte to avoid further damage.

Franklin peppers Whyte’s guard with teasing punches, but he can’t get the Briton to open up.

A bit of grappling ensues, with both fighters leaning on each other. Franklin sparks back into life briefly with a series of straight shots.

Whyte reverses the momentum and has Franklin backed up to the ropes. The “Bodysnatcher” misses with his heaviest shots, though.

Round 10

Whyte needs to fight with a bit more urgency. He’s fighting behind his jab, per his coach’s advice, but he needs some heavier output, too.

He goes back to that hook to the body, burrowing one into Franklin’s ribs from the left. Now he forces back Franklin and lashes shots into the head of his opponent! This is better from the Briton.

Whyte has a second wind! He unfurls wide hooks onto Franklin!

Then, right on the buzzer, Whyte crashes a right overhand into the cheek of Franklin, sending an explosion of sweat through the air!

Franklin barks at Whyte, trying to let the Briton know that he’s still in this.

Round 9

Franklin takes the centre of the ring at the start of this round.

Whyte with jabs, Franklin with left hooks. The American switches up his target well, doubling up his hook to the head after going to the body.

Whyte then lands probably the best punch of the fight so far, a left hook to the jaw of Franklin, who takes it clean and somehow barely reacts!

A right cross gets through for Franklin late in the round, and Whyte seems to stumble! He grabs Franklin at once to halt the American’s chances of getting meaningful shots off, but the frame ends with Franklin very much on top!

Round 8

Whyte’s new trainer Buddy McGirt asks his fighter to get back to his jab. “Don’t worry about the right hand, it’ll come.”

Whyte adheres to his coach’s advice, pressing forward but in measured fashion. Franklin seizes the opportunity to increase his own output, however, and Whyte momentarily seems fazed by the shots coming his way.

Lovely left hook to the body from Franklin. Whyte corners the American, who comes back with a solid uppercut to the body and then a hook to the head!

Franklin now fights his way out of the corner, but Whyte uses his jab to stunt the American’s movement somewhat.

The round ends with a back-and-forth spell!

Round 7

Into the second half of this fight.

A short left hook connects for Franklin. Then Whyte comes forward, but his uppercut is off-target.

A clean combination lands for Franklin! Hooks to the head, but Whyte doesn’t seem too troubled...

This time Whyte scores with his uppercut, but Franklin fires right back with a hook!

Now Whyte turns up the pressure, backing up the American and unleashing shots! Franklin with a sharp counter uppercut, though, with Whyte ducking straight into the punch!

Round 6

Whyte closes down Franklin then rolls into a one-two to the body.

It’s been mostly one-way traffic in this round, but Franklin seems to get a second wind with a minute left in the frame.

Whyte gets back behind his jab, then misses with a wild overhand right! Franklin almost seems to hurt Whyte with a hook, but the Briton laughs it off!

Round 5

Brutal left hook to the body from Whyte. That landed with a sickening thud.

A clean right cross gets through for Franklin, however, driven into the mid-section of Whyte.

The Briton with a nice change of angles now, though.

Nasty output to the body from Whyte, who then changes levels with a strong right hook to the head!

Franklin does well to reverse the position, and the fighters trade uppercuts!

Round 4

Whyte is still fighting on the front foot, but Franklin is trying to retain his opponent’s respect with a decent level of output.

The American is looking less creative now, though, and a little more laboured.

Round 3

Franklin connects with a grazing right hook around Whyte’s guard. Now Whyte buries a left hook into the body of Franklin, then another.

Whyte fires off a third, but this one seems low. No complaints from Franklin, but he retaliates with his own spiteful body hook.

Whyte with a scraping uppercut to the head, which just about finds its target.

More and more right hooks to the body from Whyte.

Round 2

Whyte is looking to counter Franklin’s jab with a right crooss over the top. The Briton blocks a right hook upstairs then curls a hook into Franklin’s midriff.

Franklin comes back with a fierce combination to the head, though!

Franklin changes levels well in the final seconds, finding right hooks to the body and head of Whyte, but the Briton also just about catches his opponent on the end of a straight one-two.

Round 1

Whyte starts in an orthodox stance, unlike how he began against Fury but as is typical for the “Bodysnatcher”.

He backs up Franklin early, but the American creates a bit of space by testing Whyte with left hooks. Whyte’s guard holds up.

Whyte looks relaxed and patient, but he opens up slightly with a left hook as Franklin turns up the aggression briefly.

Whyte unloads with a heavy right-left combination to the body. Franklin catches him on the end of a short right hand to the head, then lands a hook up top as Whyte targets the body once more – not a bad tactic by Franklin.

Gorman is warned for a punch to the back of Wardley’s head.

The fighters then trade jabs for a spell, before clinching briefly.

They separate, and Wardley presses forward once again… A right cross hurts Gorman, and a left puts him down!!

That’s three times in two rounds, but once more he shows his resilience to stand...

He’s immediately put under pressure by Wardley, though, who fires off a series of straight shots with Gorman on the ropes… and the towel comes in!

Another excerpt from our interview with Whyte:

“I’ll do whatever it takes to give my all in this game. If I have to live in a tent, I’ll live in a tent; I don’t care, it’s no problem for me. I slept under a tree before in my life, I slept on a bench before. So, living in a tent [would be] a luxury for me.

“I’m very adaptable, and that’s why I’ve been able to survive. You can put me in the desert, in Finland, wherever. I’ve been surviving since I was a child. I know how to survive and I know how to fight; as sad as it sounds, those are the two things I know how do to best.

“I’m like one of the most chilled people, I literally just go about my day, until someone f***s me off – and then I become real nasty, real fast.”

Eddie Hearn, who promotes Whyte and Anthony Joshua, said earlier this month that the winner of tonight’s main event is “pretty much nailed on” to fight “AJ” next.

Hearn told iFL TV: “It’s going to be a massive night. Of course, it’s all about the main event: Dillian Whyte returning to the ring against Jermaine Franklin.

“[Franklin has] a chance to change his life; if Jermaine Franklin beats Dillian Whyte, he’s pretty much nailed on to fight Anthony Joshua and make millions and millions of dollars.”

Turning to Franklin, who was standing beside him, Hearn said: “You do realise that if you win the fight, your bank account will go out of control, don’t you?

“[Whyte] is coming off a defeat, he’s an elite heavyweight. You’re looking to change your life. You have the opportunity.”

“Listen, I’m a nobody,” Dillian Whyte says, in one of his first interviews since fighting Tyson Fury for the world heavyweight title in front of a record 94,000 people at London’s Wembley Stadium. The thing is, despite the irony, you get the sense he really means it.

“I’ve far surpassed what I should’ve done in life already,” Whyte says from across a long, ornate table, somewhere in the downstairs maze of a suave Soho hotel. “I still want to achieve more, I’m still hungry, but after a while it becomes more about the people around you than yourself, because... I’m a nobody.”

Whyte is no nobody. The Briton, 34, is one of the most formidable heavyweights of his generation – a berserker who has battled them all and beaten the vast majority. Those in-ring battles almost seem trivial after the war Whyte waged to simply survive in Port Antonio, Jamaica, where he was “dodging bullets” before moving to Brixton and having his first child as a young teenager.

But on an April evening this spring, Whyte was again dodging incoming fire, and there was nothing trivial to him about the moment he finally got caught – a Fury uppercut scything through the London air and his opponent’s guard to put Whyte to sleep yet wake him from his dream.

“These guys put a lot into me and believe in me, fight life-and-death battles for me,” Whyte says of his team. “It was heartbreaking for them. I know for me to win a world title would have changed my life, but for them it would have been something so special.

“Of course I was disappointed; if I lost 10 quid I’d be disappointed! ‘S***, dumb f***, you lost 10 quid!’ That’s the kind of person I am, but I was disappointed for my team more than me, because of what they went through to get me that title fight. S*** had been going on for a long time, the battle we had to fight...”

“Dillian Whyte was built to survive. He survived a life of neglect, of violence, of rejection, of shooting, of stabbing, of prison, of wins and savage losses in the ring. He survived and he is still here telling the tale.

“On Saturday, indoors at Wembley, he continues the heavyweight journey he started a decade or so ago when he fights unbeaten American, Jermaine Franklin. It’s another fight for the right to remain a genuine contender; it is one of boxing’s most respected titles, but nobody ever wants to be the loser.

“Whyte lost his last fight when, under a banner of stars and lights outdoors on the pitch, he was knocked out by Tyson Fury in round six of their heavyweight world title fight at Wembley Stadium. It was not the ending that Whyte had dreamed of during the 1,000 days and nights he waited for his opportunity. Tyson was clinical on the night, Whyte looked lethargic. The chilling ending was not easy to predict.

“‘It was bad,’ insisted Whyte. ‘I was bad. But I’m back now.’”

Dillian Whyte fights Jermaine Franklin in a heavyweight main event at London’s Wembley Arena tonight.

In April, just a matter of metres away from this evening’s venue, Whyte suffered a heartbreaking knockout loss to Tyson Fury at Wembley Stadium, failing to dethrone the WBC champion in front of 94,000 fans. Now Whyte, 34, looks to bounce back, as the Briton takes on unbeaten American Franklin.

Franklin, 29, has 14 knockouts from his 21 victories as a professional and most recently competed in May, stopping Rodney Moore in the fifth round. Meanwhile, 19 of Whyte’s 28 wins have come via knockout, while his three defeats have come against Fury, Alexander Povetkin and Anthony Joshua – all by stoppage. The “Bodysnatcher” avenged his loss to Povetkin by knocking out the Russian in 2021, and Joshua is “pretty much nailed on” to fight the winner of tonight’s main event, according to Eddie Hearn, who promotes Whyte and “AJ”.

Of a potential rematch with Joshua, however, Whyte said ahead of tonight’s fight: “It’s heavyweight boxing, man, never plan while you’re in a heavyweight fight. Of course I would like that fight, it’s a major fight, but for me it’s about avenging the loss more than anything else. That’s even better to me than a world title to be honest.”
