Liverpool have moved quickly to confirm a contract extension for Portuguese forward Diogo Jota.

News broke in recent hours that Liverpool were talking over a new deal for Jota. Very soon after, an official announcement has arrived. The former Wolves star has signed a long-term commitment to extend his stay at Anfield.

Jota has been a Liverpool player since 2020, making a positive impact in the time since. He scored 13 goals from his debut season with the club and then 21 in all competitions last term.

The 25-year-old did what many previously thought wasn’t possible by breaking up Liverpool’s previous front three as he dislodged Roberto Firmino. Now, along with the Brazilian, he faces fresh competition from Darwin Nunez, giving the club an exciting attack for years to come.

The statement does not officially confirm the length of Jota’s new deal, just that it is long-term. He should be committing his best years to the club by agreeing to this contract.

The reports hinting it was coming suggested he would earn a significant pay-rise in comparison to his previous terms.

Now, Jota will be able to focus on his form on the pitch after he returns from an injury that has disrupted his pre-season preparations.

Looking at the bigger picture, Jota thanked Liverpool for the belief they continue to show in him.

He told the club’s official website: “Well, [I’m] really proud, I have to say.

“Obviously since I arrived two years ago I established myself as an important player in this team. That’s what I wanted from the beginning.

“Now, signing a new long-term deal, it’s obviously from the club’s perspective proof of the belief in myself as a player. For me, obviously it’s really good to establish I’ll be here for a while.

“So, the beginning of a new season, let’s do it.”

Diogo Jota eyes further titles with Liverpool

Referring to his comeback from injury, Jota explained how much longer fans may have to wait to see him in action again – but vowed to fight for further honours when he is back.

He said: “Unfortunately for me I had an upset in this pre-season because I got injured [in the] last game of the season playing with Portugal.

“So I was coming back in this pre-season, I felt it a little bit again. So it will be a few more weeks, I would say.

“When you fight for everything, like we did last year, you just want to do it again and to do it better, because it’s possible.

“That drive is in me and I know it’s in my teammates and all the staff. We have everything to fight for those titles out there.”

Jota was a member of the Liverpool squad that won the FA Cup and EFL Cup last season, while finishing as runners up in the Premier League and Champions League.

They have already won the Community Shield in his absence ahead of the new campaign.
