Leeds United have completed the signing of Portugal youth international defender Diogo Monteiro with trusted Whites oracle Phil Hay revealing the fee paid to Swiss side Servette.

Monteiro, capped by Portugal at every level from Under-15s through to Under-19s, moves to Elland Road just three days after turning 18. Indeed, Leeds have been in talks over the move for a number of weeks and reached agreement earlier this month.

However, Brexit rules meant his signing had to be delayed until his 18th birthday.

In an official club statement, Leeds though have on Tuesday announced his signing.

“Leeds United are pleased to announce the signing of central defender, Diogo Monteiro who joins the club from Swiss Super League side Servette FC.

“Monteiro made his league debut for Servette at the age of 16, becoming the third youngest player to make an appearance in the Swiss Super League. He has played seven times in all competitions for the Maroons, who currently sit third in the league table.

“The defender has also made a number of international appearances through various age groups for Portugal, from Under-15 to Under-19 levels, representing the country over 30 times.

“The recently turned 18-year-old has agreed a three-and-a-half year contract at Elland Road. He will initially join up with Michael Skubala’s Under-21s squad, as they continue to battle for promotion from Premier League 2 Division 2.”

According to Phil Hay of The Athletic, Leeds will pay Servette a fee of around £1m for the teenager.

The Whites will closely montor Monteiro’s progress and he could be fast-tracked into the first team if deemed good enough. Leeds have a number of Under-21s graduates as part of their first-team squad – and they will hope Monteiro follows suit.

Diego Llorente explains reasons for signing for Roma

Monteiro is described as a ball-carrying centre-half and, if his development continues at its current rate, Leeds got have got themselves a bargain.

His arrival comes just a day after it emerged that Diego Llorente is departing for Roma.

The Spain defender was an £18m signing for Leeds in the summer they secured promotion back to the Premier League.

However, his form has dropped off over the past 12 months. And with Robin Koch preferred by Jesse Marsch this season, Llorente is no longer considered first choice at Elland Road.

And despite only signing a new three-and-a-half-year deal for Leeds in December, he has been granted permisson to leave.

He will sign for Roma on Tuesday subject to successfully passing a medical. They will pay an initial £1m to sign him on loan. And the Giallorossi the option to make the move permanent in the summer.

That permanent option is reportedly in the region of £8m-£11m.

Upon touching down in the Italian capital, Llorente was asked for his reasons for making the move.

And speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, he has cited Roma’s big-name manager as a factor.

“Having the opportunity to work with Mourinho is a dream come true,” he said.

Llorente leaves Leeds having made 59 appearances over two and a half seasons, scoring four goals.
