Dirk Nowitzki to join Mavericks as special adviser, will help search for new head coach

Amid all the exits and front office turmoil, the Dallas Mavericks on Friday finally found someone who wants to be a part of the organization. Former Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki will join the team as a special adviser, according to Marc Stein of the New York Times.

Nowitzki will assist in helping the team find a new head coach after Rick Carlisle surprisingly walked away from the franchise Thursday. Nowitzki's position will not be an everyday role.

Nowitzki said he was approached by team owner Mark Cuban about advising the club. Nowitzki couldn't pass up the opportunity to help his former team.

There should be plenty of familiarity between Nowitzki and the franchise. Nowitzki spent his entire 21-year NBA career with the Mavericks. He made 14 All-Star teams, 12 All-NBA teams, won an MVP award and led the Mavericks to an NBA championship.

Mavericks recovering after losing two key members of front office

It's been an eventful week for the Mavericks. On Monday, a report surfaced suggesting star Luka Doncic didn't get along with a member of the team's front office. Cuban shot down that report, calling it "total bulls***."

Since then, however, the team has parted ways with general manager Donnie Nelson and lost Carlisle. Nowitzki's addition should help, at least from a public relations standpoint, though it might be asking a lot for Nowitzki to step in and immediately be the franchise's savior once again.
