Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has provided the latest on Tottenham’s move for Middlesbrough right-back Djed Spence.

The Englishman enjoyed a great campaign in 2021-22, making 42 Championship outings as loan club Nottingham Forest gained promotion back to the Premier League.

Forest were obviously keen to land him permanently, but a move back to the City Ground never came about.

Steve Cooper’s side have instead brought in Neco Williams from Liverpool for £17million.

Tottenham are the main suitors for Spence. However, it is taking them time to finalise a deal with Middlesbrough.

According to a report from The Telegraph on July 6, Spurs were close to sorting out an agreement for the defender. His transfer will cost an initial £15m, plus £5m in bonuses.

Boro have held out for a decent sum after turning down offers worth £10m and £11m. They feel he is worth more than those bids after an excellent season in the second tier.

Romano has now given an update on the discussions. Unfortunately for Spurs fans, he claims the move is not completed yet.

Djed Spence negotiations now ‘advanced’

However, talks between Spurs and Boro are now at an ‘advanced’ stage, which suggests things are going in the right direction.

Romano also reveals the role Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is having. The journalist claims Levy would prefer for it to be done ‘as soon as possible’. Presumably this is to give Antonio Conte as much time with Spence as possible before next season.

The 21-year-old would move to north London to provide competition for Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty at right wing-back.

Both players have struggled while wearing the Spurs shirt and Spence will push them to improve as well as provide Conte with more strength in depth.

The transfer is a clever one as Spence has the potential to get ahead of both Emerson and Doherty in the pecking order over the next couple of years.

At just 21, this means he should be able to shine for Spurs for plenty of seasons.

Conte is pursuing a wing-back revolution this summer and Spence forms part of that. Ivan Perisic has already arrived to occupy the left flank and Sergio Reguilon looks set to leave as a result.

Spence joining too means there is a good chance Spurs could line up with two completely different wing-backs compared to last season.

Meanwhile, a club insider has given their verdict on where Spurs youngster Troy Parrott will go on loan next.
