Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz called for VAR technology to be used “correctly” after being left furious over conceding a vital penalty on Paul Pogba in Friday night’s 2-1 defeat at Manchester United.

Anthony Martial sent United into the interval 1-0 up at Old Trafford, but Villa rallied and went level with a goal from Bertrand Traore 58 minutes in.

Unfortunately for Villa, United were ahead again three minutes later after Luiz was adjudged to have fouled Pogba in the penalty area, with Bruno Fernandes scoring the resulting spot-kick.

Luiz remonstrated with referee Michael Oliver, but the decision stood despite a lengthy VAR review to determine whether there was contract - and United went on to collect three points.

After the game, Villa boss Dean Smith questioned why Oliver did not use a pitchside monitor, while Luiz let out his frustrations via Twitter.

Luiz posted a video on the penalty incident with the message: "I see this video, I can’t believe it was a penalty, I always support fairer football, with fewer mistakes, but when I stop and see these type of moves. If we have VAR to help, LET’S start using it CORRECTLY, these mistakes can define the future of clubs!"

Luiz replied to his tweet with another close-up video of the contact with Pogba and wrote: “This is just to show more clearly !! @AVFCOfficial @Premierleague”.

The midfielder also retweeted a video from a fan which appeared to show Pogba advising Luke Shaw he should have gone to ground in an incident in the minutes leading up to the penalty decision.

Dean Smith said that although he felt it was the correct decision initally, he could not understand why Oliver did not consult the pitchside monitor.

"I have sympathy with Michael," Smith said. "From where I was standing, it looked a penalty.

"I thought Douglas Luiz got too tight to Paul Pogba and it looked like as he turned he pulls him down.

"I felt it was a penalty at the time and I could see why the referee certainly did as well. But then going into the dressing room and seeing it again, very, very dubious. It appears to me that he trips himself over. There's very, very minimal contact.

"If that's the case, if there's that much doubt, then the idea of VAR is to send the referee over there to have a look for himself, so a little bit dumbfounded to why he wasn't sent over to have a look at it."
