Scott fired a five-under-par 66 at Royal Queensland on Thursday to lie one shot behind the leading trio - countrymen Jason Scrivener, Min Woo Lee and John Lyras. Brad Kennedy, Anthony Quayle and South Korean Jeunghun Wang tied Scott's 66 to join him in a tie for fourth place. Smith, meanwhile, opened with a three-under 68 that leaves him three shots off the pace but with plenty of time to play catch-up. Smith and Scott were paired together on Thursday and seemed to enjoy each other's company, making 12 birdies between them to go along with three bogeys. Scott also had his old caddie Steve Williams - Tiger Woods' former bagman - back carrying his clubs, and they wasted little time in resuming their successful partnership.

"Yeah, it was great, he obviously hasn't been out at any events for quite a long time, so I think he was pretty excited," said Scott, a former two-time Australian PGA champion. "We came out and played Tuesday morning, it's quite easy. I may have changed, but I know he's not and so I knew what to expect when we came out and to fall back into familiar routines was pretty good."

Scott revealed that some local advice on how to deal with Royal Queensland's undulating greens paid off nicely, with his decision to putt multiple times from off the green paying dividends. "The conditions couldn't be better and you want to take advantage of that," he said. "I'm very pleased with that, all really solid stuff." Meanwhile, Smith is looking forward to a potential battle with Scott for the title.

"Scotty was playing really nicely, he's coming into some form the old fella and might be hard to chase down," Smith said. "Yeah, I'd like it (a final-round match-up), haven't done that yet with Scotty, it'd be epic."

Smith is one of a number of LIV golfers in the field in Australia for this week's DP World Tour event, joining Marc Leishman (69 Thursday), Wade Ormsby (72) and defending champion Jed Morgan (70).
