Dragons reveal groundshare discussions

County chairman Chris Bright has described their Spytty Park ground as "not fit for purpose", and Hazell revealed talks had been held over a possible groundshare. It is not known whether County would play all their home fixtures at Rodney Parade, which has a capacity of 11,000 or if they would choose to play a select number of games.

Hazell told BBC Wales: "We're in the initial stages of negotiations. If we can accommodate them we will as it helps the town out."

He continued: "It helps the soccer team out and helps the rugby team out, but rugby would take the first choice on fixtures and everything else.

"We wouldn't get a tremendous lot of money out of it but it all helps, all finances in the time as we are now helps."

The Newport rugby club side also play at Rodney Parade, but Hazell does not feel adding FA Trophy finalists County to the list of teams playing there would present a problem.

He said: "Our ground staff are pretty good, I think the pitch can put up with it.

"The fixtures, I don't think they all play on a Saturday, I think they have midweek games, so as long as things fitted in we can accommodate them."

The Dragons were given a suspended fine of £10,000 in February and forced to forfeit their LV=Cup clash with Saracens after the fixture was called off due to a frozen pitch, while a league meeting with the Cardiff Blues in November was postponed due to a waterlogged playing surface.
