Bale has been named the Football Writers' Player of the Year, the PFA Player of the Year and the PFA Young Player of the Year after a remarkable season in which he has smashed his previous goalscoring records, notching 20 in the Premier League alone.

The Wales international has flourished in a central position just off the striker - a role which Villas-Boas first allotted to Bale during pre-season.

"It came out of an experiment first in Baltimore in America, when we played Liverpool in pre-season," Villas-Boas told Eurosport-Yahoo! "Fortunately for us it is something that worked and due to a couple of injuries that we had it was something that we had to try.

"His goals started coming through the middle so in the end we fine-tuned the player to play in that position and he has been tremendous because his talent allows him to do that.

"I'm not sure if the shift is definitive because what it allows is for us to use the player in different positions - but at the moment, because of these goals he has been scoring, he has been getting the best from playing there.

"He has been outstanding this season, mainly because he has found himself enjoying what he is doing so much. This is, I think, vital for any football player.

"He has been playing in a different position to what he was playing before - allowing him to score more goals, which always gives you an extra motivation - and I think all of these pieces together has made for a wonderful season at the end. Plus his ambition to be at the top."
