The Spaniard is adamant that reaching Wembley for the first time in the club's history is not enough for him - he wants the trophy and a coveted place in Europe.
"Qualifying for Europe was a big target for us. Since I arrived at the football club I made sure that everyone knew that was what we were working towards. And getting to the final has given us that opportunity," Martinez told Eurosport-Yahoo!
"All the efforts in preparing for the game have been towards beating Manchester City and lifting the trophy - I don't care what people say, you cannot savour the day without competing in the match.
"I'm optimistic. Manchester City are the favourites and rightly so, but every time we have played them of late we have always been close to getting a positive result.
"We played them not too long ago and we were very unfortunate. Manchester City will give us respect this time because we deserved the three points away from home.
"They took their foot off the pedal a little bit and felt that they did not have to be at their best to beat us - but at Wembley they will be fully focused and we know they will be at their best.
"We know we can play well and be a good team, but the challenge is whether we can be a winning team.
"When we are at our best we are capable of beating anyone. But only the best from us will be good enough to compete."
