Dustin Johnson injury update: Golfer withdraws from Masters

Adidas has unloaded its golfing brands TaylorMade, Adams Golf and Ashworth for $425 million, as golf equipment sales continue to slump.

Dustin Johnson withdrew himself from the Masters Thursday, a day after injuring his back by falling down stairs.

"I can't swing full, I can't make my normal swing and I didn't think there was any chance I could compete," Johnson told reporters. "Back swing was fine, but every time down, right at impact, it would catch."

Johnson was a favorite to win the tournament, but couldn't get over the injury. ESPN's Tom Rinaldi reported early Thursday morning that the golfer was in "significant pain" Wednesday night and had trouble resting.

Comments from his trainer to Golf Digest early in the day made it sound like there was progress. He evenarrived at the course shortly after noon Thursday and briefly hit some balls at the driving range before heading for more treatment on his back, Golf.com reported.

According to the Masters' broadcast Johnsonwas walking to the garage Wednesday to move a car at his rental house and slipped, landing on his back.
