Incoming Man Utd striker Wout Weghorst will bring “a real amount of physique” to Erik ten Hag’s attacks, according to Dutch football expert Marcel van der Kraan.
Widespread reports have claimed that Weghorst is flying to the UK today in order to complete his medical and sign contracts after Man Utd agreed a compensation package of around €3m to Besiktas.
Man Utd have managed to get Besiktas to terminate their deal for the Netherlands international in order for the Red Devils to sign him on loan from parent club Burnley.
Besiktas wanted to keep him in Turkey after Weghorst scored eight goals and provided four assists in 16 Super Lig matches but now Man Utd look to have got their man.
And Dutch football expert Van der Kraan thinks Weghorst will be able to help out Ten Hag’s side in the final 20/25 minutes when they need a striker to make a difference.
Van der Kraan told Sky Sports: “Well of course he’s been showing that at the World Cup hasn’t he? He’s had a bit of an unusual career but what he always brings is a massive amount of professionalism.
“What all of his coaches have said, what all of his colleagues have said and a real amount of physique. He’s one of the strongest, he’s one of the biggest. I think in England they called him ‘the dinosaur’ when he turned up at Burnley.
“Is he prehistoric? No, he’s man who can add something when they really need him in the last 20 or 25 minutes, when they need a different style of play and Ten Hag has been short of real physique. That’s why he wanted his man, who also did not cost too much.”
And Man Utd legend Andy Cole admits he was “surprised as anybody” to hear that Weghorst would be joining his former club.
Cole told Casinos En Ligne: “Wow! When I heard about Weghorst I was as surprised as anybody. I know he got a couple of goals in the World Cup and he’s on loan in Turkey now but he had an absolutely terrible time at Burnley.
“You can only say if he had such a tough time at Burnley what can we really expect if he comes to Manchester United?”
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – who was briefly linked to Man Utd in the summer – could be available this month after reports claimed yesterday that he was thinking about leaving Chelsea.
But Cole doubts Man Utd would be in for the Gabon international after his recent struggles. He added: “In the current climate with the way Aubameyang is struggling at the moment, which I’m very surprised he has done by the way, I can’t see it. I’m still very surprised United are looking to bring players in on loan.
“I think Man Utd’s best loan player ever, that they should’ve taken on permanently, was Henrik Larsson. That was a phenomenal loan move but when you look at all the loan deals since then, none of them have really worked.”
