The 21-year-old attacked with 5km to go and hung on for a solo victory – having enough time in the final 100 metres to celebrate and savour the win before the peloton came in.

The next six to come in were all French with Jonathan Hivert (Saur-Sojasun) and Sebastien Hinault (AG2R-La Mondiale) coming home next.

Samuel Dumoulin (Cofidis) finished seventh and that was enough to see him claim the overall Coupe de France victory.
