Dwight Gayle reveals Hibs star he spoke with to sell him on Easter Road transfer

Dwight Gayle has revealed he picked the brains of Hibs captain Joe Newell about a move to the club.

The former Newcastle and West Brom striker joined the Easter Road side this afternoon after it emerged recently that David Gray and Malky Mackay were hopeful of sorting a deal for the free transfer. The veteran striker, 34, has been out of action since he left Derby County earlier this year but he was chuffed to make the move north for the first time in his career.

It took a chat with former Peterborough teammate Newell to convince the hitman to complete the switch and Gayle explained how he spoke with his new teammate more than once.

"He was probably the person I spoke to most," Gayle told the club's TV channel after finalising his deal. "We would speak most days about it and to be honest, I think he was helping push it with the gaffer. He had a look of good things to say and was a big reason for it happening.

Gayle was prolific at the likes of the Baggies during his loan stint back in 2018/19 as well as while at St James' Park.
