EastEnders stars who rarely share scenes unveil 26-year friendship

EastEnders Honey Mitchell and Howie Danes haven't shared that many scenes since the latter joined the BBC One soap in 2021, but Emma Barton and Delroy Atkinson, who play the pair, go back a long way.

The official EE Instagram account decided to make us really feel the passage of time with a Throwback Thursday post this week, uploading a recent photo of Emma and Delroy above a photo of the pair from the start of their friendship... 26 years ago.

The caption reads "26 years of friendship later! #EastEnders #ThrowbackThursday #ThenAndNow."

In the comments, Emma revealed that the duo went to the Guildford School of Acting together, and that the old photo was taken in the Scruffy Murphys pub in Guildford (which is now The Britannia).

Danielle Harold (Lola) and Bobby Brazier (Freddie) were among the EastEnders stars sharing their love for the photos and the friendship in the comments, while many fans commented on how well the duo have aged.

Last year, Emma opened up about her past career struggles before she landed her most famous role.

"There was a time I was just like: 'I'm going to have to give up'," she revealed.

"But I didn't want to, and I was just holding on by a thread, just going: 'I'm going to still persevere'. And it did pay off. But there are times when you just used to shut your bedroom door and go: 'Please, please, somebody help me because I don't know what's happening with my life.'

I did find it really tough. And I'm more of a happy person than I am a sad person. I felt alone. But I knew I just had to just keep going."

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
