Eddie Howe had a ‘truly incredible’ goal from Allan Saint-Maximin to thank for Newcastle United earning a point against Wolves on Sunday.
Newcastle were on the verge of a defeat away at Molineux after a fine goal from outside the box from Ruben Neves. But Saint-Maximin responded in the last minute with a long-distance strike of his own to earn the visitors a point.
Saint-Maximin volleyed the ball in from outside the box to reply to Neves’ earlier strike. It means Newcastle remain unbeaten after their first four Premier League matches of the 2022-23 season, even if three of those have been draws.
For manager Howe, the determination from his players was praiseworthy, as well as how they limited Wolves’ threats on the counter attack.
Howe told Match of the Day: “There is a massive importance to every game. We were determined to keep our unbeaten start going. The players gave everything and never gave up.
“It was a great goal from Allan at the end.
“We chased the game very well. Wolves are a genuine counter-attacking threat; we had to control that and we were very effective in the second half. Eventually that paid off and I thought we deserved it.”
On Saint-Maximin’s goal, he added: “The ball flips up in the air and I wasn’t sure what he was going to do. It is a truly incredible finish, technically to control that and keep it down.”
Saint-Maximin proud to be part of Newcastle
Saint-Maximin’s goal was his first of the season and 13th overall in a Newcastle shirt.
And he revealed after the game that he had been working on the technique that led to it.
The attacking midfielder told Sky Sports: “We work hard in training, I try to put more things in my game and I practice a lot with the trainer to help me hit that volley.
“I am really happy to score that goal because it was important for us to draw or try to win the game.
“I don’t think about myself, I just think about my team – I am really happy to draw the game.”
He concluded: “I have a lot of people around me to kick me and put me out of the game, so I am very happy to score.
“I am really proud to be part of that team.”
Newcastle are next in action Wednesday, when they are on their travels again to face Liverpool.
