Reports claim Newcastle United have now opened dialogue over the possible signing of Chelsea forward Callum Hudson-Odoi during the summer transfer window.

The 21-year-old has been with the Blues his entire professional career after coming through the club’s youth setup. He made his senior debut in January 2018 and has gone on to enjoy 126 outings in all competitions. England came calling in 2019 and the talented youngster has three caps to his name.

However, he has not represented his country in three years, with only a peripheral role at Stamford Bridge. He started just 10 Premier League games in 2020-2021 and 11 last term, coming off the bench on many occasions.

Hudson-Odoi has bagged 16 goals for the west Londoners but his days at the club may be numbered. Journalist Rob Pratley insists the Magpies have now ‘started talks’ over the potential deal.

He tweeted: “Newcastle have formally started talks with Chelsea over a potential signing of Callum Hudson-Odoi.

“The fee would be significant, and Chelsea are pondering over trying to include a buyback clause.”

Tyneside chief Eddie Howe has made three signings during the off-season. Matt Targett’s loan deal became permanent while centre-back Sven Botman arrived from Lille.

Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope completes the trio but there has been an absence of attacking players in the recruitment drive.

That could all change if the latest rumours turn out to be true.

Hudson-Odoi part of twin Chelsea assault

Hudson-Odoi has been linked with a move to St James’ Park since early July. Howe wants to increase his options out wide and sees the Londoner as a player with bags of unfulfilled potential.

But he is not the only Chelsea player being targeted if reports are to be believed. Striker Timo Werner is said to be on the north-east club’s radar.

The Germany international wants to see more game time and may need to move to fulfil that wish. He has failed to produce the goods on a consistent basis with the capital outfit.

And it was reported a few weeks ago that RB Leipzig are keen to take him back to the Bundesliga.

Newcastle can now compete with most clubs in the transfer market due to the Saudi-backed takeover. And it may be that the 26-year-old wants to prove himself in the English game.

Pundit Gabby Agbonlahor has warned Howe off signing the 26-year-old, however. The former Aston Villa striker feels he is ‘not good enough’ and ‘doesn’t score goals’.

Newcastle have been tipped to bring in many new faces before the window closes and been linked with a number of stars.

And, with cash at his disposal, it would be surprising if the former Bournemouth chief did opt for Werner.

The Hudson-Odoi angle makes more sense as he is five years younger and would surely benefit from playing regularly under Howe.
