Eddie Howe could lose one of his most exciting Newcastle United players this month as reports continue to talk up AC Milan’s chances of landing him.
Newcastle have yet to sign any senior players during the January transfer window. They have brought in teenagers Amadou Diallo and Garang Kuol, though Diallo has gone into their academy and Kuol has joined Scottish club Hearts on loan.
Newcastle could complete their first signing in the coming days, though. They have sent Everton a fresh proposal for winger Anthony Gordon and are confident of capturing him before Chelsea.
Everton have previously pushed back Newcastle and Chelsea’s bids for Gordon. But given the turmoil they are in, they might have to let him go before the transfer window shuts.
While Gordon could move to St James’ Park, fellow winger Allan Saint-Maximin may be on his way out.
On Tuesday, it emerged AC Milan had begun targeting Saint-Maximin as a potential replacement for Rafael Leao. The Portuguese has been linked with major Premier League teams such as Manchester United and Chelsea.
Milan were originally hoping to snare Nicolo Zaniolo from Roma. But their approaches have been pushed back and they are now focusing on a deal for Saint-Maximin instead.
The original report did not reveal when the Serie A giants might contact Newcastle about the attacker, or the type of offer they would make.
AC Milan backed to launch offer for Newcastle star
Those questions have now been answered through an update from Foot Mercato. They state Milan are expected to submit a bid ‘in the next 48 hours’.
However, they cannot afford to spend big money this month. As such, they will send Newcastle a loan bid with the option to buy this summer.
Saint-Maximin could be tempted by the prospect of joining the Rossoneri. After all, Milan are traditionally one of the biggest clubs in Europe.
Plus, they will be able to put him straight into the starting lineup once Leao leaves. Whereas at Newcastle, Saint-Maximin is struggling to get into the team ahead of Joelinton and Miguel Almiron.
Despite what the player may want, Newcastle are highly unlikely to let him go to Milan. Saint-Maximin is a fantastic option for Howe to have off the bench when Newcastle are looking for a winner or a method of tiring opposition defenders out.
Newcastle will do all they can to keep forward
Keeping Saint-Maximin from Milan’s clutches will show that Newcastle mean business and are intent on becoming one of the most successful teams in England.
Another factor to consider is Newcastle’s demands. They spent an initial £16.5million to snare Saint-Maximin from Nice in August 2019. They would want to make a profit when selling him.
Milan cannot afford to put up much money for him now, which explains the loan-to-buy offer. But it is unlikely they will be able to acquire the necessary money to match Newcastle’s asking price even in the summer.
It makes sense that Milan are looking at Saint-Maximin as a replacement for Leao, as he is a similarly electric player. However, it is unlikely they will manage to prize the 25-year-old away from Newcastle.
Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano says a Man Utd player can leave once an ‘important proposal’ arrives, and Newcastle are among the clubs considering a bid for him.
