Eighth Street Middle to host girls wrestling region traditional Friday

Feb. 1—TIFTON — For the first time ever, Tift County will host the Region 1-6A girls wrestling traditional tournament. The meet, set for Friday evening at Eighth Street Middle, will match the Lady Devils up against five other schools.

Tift athletic director Chris Martin and Coach Zac Martin said weigh-ins begin at 4 p.m. with action to start as soon possible after.

The Lady Devils did well at region duals, but Coach Shawn Watson said their lack of numbers hurt them. Tift tied two opponents, but lost on criteria — forfeits because they did not entries in several weight classes. Criteria kept them out of the state tournament.

Watson said several other region coaches told him the Lady Devils will do well at the traditional tournament, which is an individual meet. Tift has a veteran roster, with Samantha Vicars and Addison Braswell both wrestling at state a year ago.
