2020 is truly the year of the secret royal wedding, as yet another one has just taken place with Eleonore von Habsburg and Belgian Formula E driver Jérôme d’Ambrosio tying the knot earlier this week.
Although their nuptials were largely overshadowed by the surprise marriage of Princess Beatrice and real estate developer Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi’s last week, the pair tied the knot in a civil ceremony on Monday with their family members in attendance.
Von Habsburg is the Archduchess of Austria and a Royal Princess of Hungary, Bohemia and Croatia and is the daughter of Karl von Habsburg and Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza.
Her great grandfather was Charles I of Austria, the final Emperor of Austria. She has previously worked as a jewellery designer and has modelled for brands including Dolce & Gabbana.
They were married at a registry office in Monaco in a socially distanced ceremony, with both Von Habsburg and d’Ambrosio’s sisters Gloria and Olivia serving as witnesses to the marriage.
Pictures of the wedding show attendees in masks, spaced out in the grand office, as d’Ambrosio and Von Habsburg exchanged rings.
Von Habsburg wore a white off-shoulder Carolina Herrera dress, complete with a netted mini veil, sandals and dangling earrings. She carried a bouquet of white and pink flowers, while d’Ambrosio chose a navy suit and pale blue tie.
The mayor of Monaco, Georges Marsan, also attended the wedding.
After the ceremony, the couple posed outside for photographs as they were showered with rose petals and Von Habsburg stayed cool with a blue tasselled fan.
A larger group of family and friends later met afterwards for a socially distanced lunch.
The couple have been together for three years, after first meeting on a flight from London to Nice.
Their engagement was revealed last year, however due to government restrictions in Monaco they were unable to throw a grand wedding - however it is believed that they will hold a church wedding for a larger group of attendees once restrictions are lifted.
Thank you all for your kind messages on our wedding! While it was originally planned for April in Jordan, the pandemic derailed those plans and it was safer for my husband’s family to hold it in the UK. God willing we look forward to celebrating in Jordan once the situation allows pic.twitter.com/moCMSOxZxp— Raiyah bint Al-Hussein (@RaiyahHKJ)July 7, 2020
Besides Princess Beatrice and Eleonore von Habsburg, Princess Raiyah of Jordan also married journalist and Roald Dahl’s grandson Ned Donovan in a small socially distanced ceremony in the UK three weeks ago.
Princess Raiyah shared pictures from the wedding on Instagram, sharing that they had originally planned to marry in Jordan in April, but were hoping to celebrate their wedding in Jordan “once the situation allows.” Her mother, Queen Noor, was in attendance.
