Elsa Hosk’s Favourite Things

Elsa Hosk and Frozen’s Queen Elsa are not dissimilar.

With their platinum blonde hair, piercing blue eyes and shared Scandinavian name, it’s not indisputable that the Disney monarch was somewhat inspired by the ex-Angel. But did Queen Elsa play basketball?

Before becoming a world-renowned model, Hosk actually shot hoops professionally for two years. Although she ultimately abandoned sport for the fashion world, the Swedish-born stunner says that the intense rigor of practice helped prepare her for the physical demands of modelling.

Best known for her seven year stint as a Victoria’s Secret Angel (from 2011 to 2018), the 32-year-old has also appeared in campaigns for brands such as Dior, Dolce & Gabbana and Guess. But Hosk is far more than just the 15th sexiest model in the world.

Advocate for anti-human-trafficking organization FAIR Girls, new mother to baby Tuulikki, and partner of British businessman Tom Daly (not the diver) - Hosk has plenty of strings to her bow... And she’s just added another.

Stepping out from behind the camera and taking on the more creative role of designing clothes, her most recent collaboration with UK womenswear and footwear brand 4th & Reckless has just dropped.

The collection is refined and chic, bold and beautiful - and every item can be styled again and again. The line consists of sharp tailoring with contemporary twists and power prints. From high-drama double-breasted suits to the ultimate party pieces (like statement zebra print trousers and glittering metallics), these designs take you from AM-PM.

We caught up with Hosk to chat about the collection, motherhood and more.

What are you up to at the moment?

I’m back working full speed! I have so many fun collaborations in the works: designing, art-directing, planning, and shooting. I’m also in the middle of renovating our Richard Neutra house in Los Angeles. I’m afraid I’ve become a bit of a mid-century nerd, but researching and planning the house is one of my favourite things I do. Most importantly though, I try and spend as much time as I can with our 8 month old daughter, Tuulikki. She is the love and joy of my life.

How was it being the face of the campaign for this new collection with 4th & Reckless, A Life Less Ordinary?

It was so great working with 4th on this campaign. I love what they’ve designed and feel it’s so close to my own personal style. The campaign was shot by Yulia Gorbachenko, one of my absolute favourite photographers, and the result is so awesome.

What is your favourite piece in the collection?

My favourite pieces are the pinstripe suit, black oversized suit, knitted white dress, and the Joan trench.

How would you describe your personal style?

Relaxed, eclectic, unique... Comfy!

How does Swedish style differ from British style?

I think Swedish style is very monochromatic. A lot of black, grey, white. British style is a bit more daring.

Has your style changed at all since becoming a mother?

I don’t think it has! Maybe it’s less interesting because I have less time to think about my outfits, but I still try and source unique vintage items. Because of the lack of time, I also buy more things online now versus in store. It’s so great that everything is online but I do miss going to flea markets and browsing through vintage shops.

Do you miss your time as a Victoria’s Secret Angel?

I miss travelling with the team. We were like one big family and we went to so many beautiful places all over the world together. I’m so grateful for all of those experiences, but my life is so different now with our baby. I feel like it was perfect timing when my time as an Angel came to an end. I’m more settled now, working from home and taking on a more creative role - designing instead of just modelling. It definitely feels like a natural evolution of my career.

Do you think the fashion world has come a long way in recent years in terms of body diversity – or do you think it needs to go further?

I am so proud to see the change in recent years. It’s something that has always been on my mind since starting out in the industry. Like, why did it take so long? In the past, I suggested hiring a more diverse team and models and it wasn’t welcomed… But it is now. Of course, fashion should represent everybody. It’s beautiful to watch a runway show or open a magazine and see diverse bodies and different skin colours. But yes, we still have a way to go. We have to make sure we keep working towards more diversity and that it’s not just a trend.

What’s your self-care routine?

A long bath with a good scrub or oil, a Byredo candle, a luxe face cream. Ah, heaven!
