Emi Martinez fantasy not enough for Aston Villa dream as pundits all make same point
Aston Villa are on a tough run, but will be hoping the omens are on their side at Chelsea on Sunday (1.30pm kick-off).
Unai Emery’s men have not won in the league for six weeks - but that success came in West London at Fulham, just down the road from Sunday’s top-flight opponents Chelsea.
Villa have also won on their last two trips to Stamford Bridge in the league, and were a contentious decision away from beating Juventus in the Champions League in midweek.
However, the big-match pundits are putting on a united front - and they are all pointing to a home victory on Sunday.

In his regular BBC prediction column, Chris Sutton makes a huge Emi Martinez admission, but then plumps for a Chelsea victory. He explains: “Villa have not been firing on all cylinders recently, but they were unlucky not to beat Juventus on Wednesday after having a late winner ruled out.
“I captained Villa keeper Emi Martinez in my Fantasy team last weekend because I had not kept many clean sheets and just had a gut feeling they would keep Crystal Palace out - and of course they conceded after four minutes.
“Martinez is an outstanding goalkeeper, the best in the Premier League, but I cannot see him keeping a clean sheet this week either.
“I am backing Chelsea to take this one. They were too strong for Leicester last weekend and while Cole Palmer did not deliver, Nicolas Jackson keeps on scoring and looks like a different player compared to last season.”
Sutton's prediction: Chelsea 2-1 Aston Villa
Harry Redknapp is also jumping on the Chelsea bandwagon in his tipping column for BetVictor.
In predicting a 2-1 home win, he says: “This should be a good game, particularly with the way Chelsea have been playing. I really like watching them they have so much quality going forward and create plenty of chances.
“Villa are going through a bit of a tough spell at the minute, and I can’t really put my finger on what’s going wrong, but they aren’t really getting the breaks.
“Chelsea can go six points above Villa with a win, and I think they’ll get it. I don’t think Nicolas Jackson gets enough appreciation; people forget his age. He never stops running and his movement is excellent at times.”
Redknapp's prediction: Chelsea 2-1 Aston Villa
It was a similar verdict from Paul Merson in his column for Sportskeeda, while trying to put his finger on why Villa have struggled of late.
He says: “It’s funny how things change so quickly in football. Aston Villa were flying along a few weeks ago and look at them now. They are without a win in their last six games.
“Villa have definitely lost their way a little bit. They struggled without Ezri Konsa in the last game. The back-four looked shaky against Crystal Palace and their high line did not work.
“I’m expecting Chelsea to get another win here. Villa have too much going on for them now with the Champions League as well.”
Merson’s prediction: Chelsea 3-1 Aston Villa
