Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit has given the main reason why Mikel Arteta’s side should look to bring in Tammy Abraham over Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The Gunners are on the hunt for a new centre-forward amid uncertainty surrounding two existing options up front. Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah could both leave the Emirates on free transfers this summer, as their contracts are expiring.

This will be a blow for the club, although it will also set up the exciting proposition of them finding a top-class replacement.

Tammy Abraham and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are two attackers under consideration.

The English duo both have experience scoring in the Premier League.

Abraham left Chelsea last summer to join Roma, just days after the return of Romelu Lukaku at Stamford Bridge.

Abraham has been deadly in front of goal since then. He has bagged 24 goals in 49 matches so far this campaign.

And the 24-year-old could end the season on a high when Roma face Feyenoord in the Europa Conference League final.

Tammy Abraham, Dominic Calvert-Lewin both eyed by Arsenal

Calvert-Lewin, meanwhile, showcased his talent last term. 21 strikes came his way in 39 games.

The Everton man has struggled with injuries during 2021-22 and is yet to get back to his best. But he could still be a good option for Arteta at Arsenal.

During a recent interview, former midfielder Petit was asked about the club’s search for a new talisman up front.

He thinks Abraham’s pursuit of ‘revenge’, following his poor treatment at Chelsea, could make him a more effective signing than Calvert-Lewin.

“They need a physical presence, especially when they play against compact defences,” Petit said (via Goal).

“I’m pretty sure Arsenal will get back step by step to what it was before, in terms of controlling the game. That means they will have to play most of the time against opponents that will play compact defensively and try to play counter-attack all the time. That means you need something different.

“For me, Abraham or Calvert-Lewin have that. They are very physical in the penalty area, with heading, and they will take two opponents all of the time.

“Between the two, Abraham and Calvert-Lewin, they are very good young players, very interesting prospects for the future. But the fact that Abraham left Chelsea and what he is doing with Roma – he is not far from winning a European cup and is one of the best scorers in Italy – who could have predicted that last season when he left?

“If you bring him back to England, especially in London, he will have the feeling of revenge – which is very important to find, that extra motivation. I would say take Tammy Abraham.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal and Tottenham are part of the race to snare a player who has been labelled the ‘next Lautaro Martinez’.
