Empoli forward Levan Mchedlidze has been assaulted by his own fans in the car park of Stadio Carlo Castellani following Sunday's 3-1 defeat against Sassuolo, Goal have reported.
The 27-year-old played no part in the defeat, absent through injury, but he was set upon after the game by a group of angry supporters. Mchedlidze had pulled up to discuss the performance and result with the fans, and clearly the conversation quickly escalated.
The defeat left Empoli four points off the bottom three with four Serie A games remaining, with relegation growing ever more concerning.
Mchedlidze was reportedly punched in the face in the ensuing scrap, before another group of fans protected the player.
The Georgian striker has scored six goals in 15 league appearances so far this season, a respectable return for the lowest scoring side in Serie A.
Empoli host Bologna in their next league game, before a trip to Cagliari, as they look to secure their safety and pull clear of 18th placed Crotone.
