England’s star all-rounder Ben Stokes has stated that Joe Root is the greatest England captain in the red-ball format. He feels that not winning an Ashes series, does not lower Joe Root’s achievements as an England skipper.

Joe Root took over the captaincy from Sir Alastair Cook in 2017. He has led England in 55 test matches so far, out of which they have won 27 tests, and has a win percentage of 49. After a win in the recently concluded Headingley Test, Root surpassed Michael Vaughan to become the most successful English test skipper.

Former England cricketer has also praised Joe Root, but they feel an Ashes series win will define his captaincy. However, England all-rounder Ben Stokes feels otherwise.

The Sky Sports Cricket tweeted asking the fans, about Joe Root’s captaincy. They wrote, “Does Joe Root need to win an Ashes series to be classed as one of England’s ‘great’ Test captains?

Ben Stokes, expressing his thoughts, replied, “Already is the greatest…. most wins as a English Test Captain.. end of”

Joe Root in dazzling form in the Test series against England

The England skipper is in stellar form in red-ball cricket at the moment. This year, he has already scored over 1300 runs in 11 test matches at an average of 69.90. His tally in 2021 includes six centuries and one fifty, with 228 being his best score.

In the ongoing series against India, Joe Root is the leading run-getter. He has scored 507 runs in five innings, at an average of 126.75. The England skipper led his team from the front, in Leed’s Test match. He slammed his third hundred of the series, helping England to take a massive first-innings lead and level the series 1-1.

The fourth Test match between India and England will take place on September 2 at the Kennington Oval, London.
