Former Indian skipper MS Dhoni was roped in as the mentor of the Indian cricket team that has been selected for the T20 World Cup in the UAE. He will work closely with Ravi Shastri behind helping the team win another ICC title. This will be Virat Kohli’s first ICC title if indeed he wins it.

Meanwhile, BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced the appointment of MS Dhoni as the mentor of the Indian team for the marquee tournament. India won three ICC titles under him, the last of which came in 2013. That also remains India’s last ICC title as well.

BCCI’s secretary held discussions with Dhoni, who agreed to work with Ravi Shastri and his team during the course of the tournament. Shastri has been at the helm of affairs for the majority of the past 7 years and has also worked with Dhoni for 4 years. Hence, they are no strangers to each other’s style of work.

Sharing his thoughts on MS Dhoni’s selection as a mentor, Gavaskar said that it’s a welcome move. The former skipper though also prayed that there’s no clash between the mentor and head coach over tactics and team selection.

MS Dhoni’s Appointment As Mentor Good News: Sunil Gavaskar

“MS Dhoni’s appointment is good news for India but I am just praying there is no clash. If Ravi Shastri and MS Dhoni can get on the same wavelength, then it’s big news for India”

“But if there are disagreements over tactics and team selection, then there might be bit of an effect on the team. But MS Dhoni’s appointment itself will be a big boost for Team India. He has so much experience, he knows everything. There was no bigger, destructive player than MS Dhoni when he was active in international cricket” Gavaskar told Aaj Tak.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah also spoke about how MS Dhoni agreed on the role instantly during the squad announcement.

“As far as MS is concerned, I spoke to him when I was in Dubai. He agreed to be a mentor for T20 World Cup only. I also discussed the issue with my colleagues and they are all on the same page. I spoke to captain and vice-captain and as well as Ravi Shastri and they are all on the same page,” Jay Shah said.

India will begin their campaign against Pakistan on October 24. The final will be played on November 14.
