England 2-0 Germany: Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane strike late as Three Lions reach Euro 2020 quarter-finals
England avenged historic knockout defeats to Germany and underlined their credentials as genuine challenges for Euro 2020 with a 2-0 win at Wembley.
Raheem Sterling set England on their way to a memorable victory with a third goal in four matches at the Finals before Harry Kane answered his critics with a second to send 45,000 supporters inside the national stadium into delirium.
England will meet Ukraine or Sweden in Rome in the quarter-final and the route back to Wembley for the final on July 11 should now hold no fear for Gareth Southgate’s side after one of the biggest wins in their modern history.
The most impressive performance of Southgate's five-year tenure was another feather in the cap for the manager, whose side contained Germany before winning the game with two superb team goals in the final 15 minutes.
Southgate's introduction of Jack Grealish for surprise starter Bukayo Saka was the catalyst, with the 68th-minute substitute playing Luke Shaw whose cross was turned home from close range by Sterling.
Shaw and Grealish were also involved in the second goal which came at the end of another subdued all-round performance from Kane but illustrated why Southgate has kept such faith in his captain.
Grealish whipped in a cross from the left and Kane stooped to head past Manuel Neuer, sparking wild scenes of celebration at Wembley which lasted long after the final whistle.
Jordan Pickford also played his part, denying Timo Werner and Kai Havertz with brilliant saves either side of half-time, while Thomas Muller missed a one-on-one shortly after Sterling's goal.
England will now first a first away day in Saturday's quarter-final after a remarkably composed run to the last eight, including four clean sheets and a first knockout win over Germany since 1966.
