Five tries from winger Tommy Makinson helped England ease past Papua New Guinea 46-6 to progress to the semi-finals of the World Cup.
Makinson becomes only the third player in World Cup history to score five or more tries in a game.
England will face the winner of Sunday’s quarter-final between Samoa and Tonga at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
In the other semi-final on Friday, reigning champions Australia will take on the winner of New Zealand and Fiji at Elland Road, the home of Leeds United.
Tom Burgess started the game in ferocious form, taking in a couple of powerful carries which really laid the platform for England. The South Sydney Rabbitohs prop even opened the scoring when he crashed over under the sticks, with Makinson converting.
Makinson got his first try of the game when he latched on to a grubber from Sam Tomkins. He converted his own try.
George Williams ran the show in the first half, and a chip kick from him resulted in Dom Young scoring his ninth try of the tournament.
Makinson got his second in the 18th minute when he collected a chip kick from Williams to touch down, again adding the extras.
Williams got on the scoresheet himself midway through the first half after showing great support play.
England were ruthless in attack and they didn’t give Papua New Guinea any room to breathe. They posted further tries before the half hour mark through Kallum Watkins and Makinson, who completed his hat-trick.
Shaun Wane’s side took a comfortable 38-0 lead into the break after an impressive first half showing.
Papua New Guinea were much better in the second half and came back into the contest with England.
Makinson extended his tally and England’s lead on the hour when he went over for his fourth of the afternoon.
The Kumuls scored a consolation try in the final 10 minutes as Jimmy Ngutlik raced onto a grubber from Alex Johnston.

Makinson made history with five minutes remaining as he became only the third player to score five or more tries in a World Cup match. He couldn’t convert but England wrapped up an impressive 46-6 win at the DW Stadium.
