Gareth Southgate is keeping Germany guessing about his England team selection – refusing to rule Mason Mount in or out of Tuesday’s Euro 2020 clash.

Mount will be allowed to rejoin the rest of the England squad from midnight on Monday after having to isolate as a Covid-19 precaution.

The Chelsea midfielder, along with Ben Chilwell, has been forced to train individually and take part in team meetings via Zoom.

Southgate plans to leave it late before making a decision, claiming he would have to assess Mount and Chilwell’s state of mind after being left out for the past week.

Ahead of the round-of-16 tie with Germany, Southgate said: “They’re having to travel separately to the team, so they’ve had individual training programmes this week.

“The only times they have been able to join up with us are when there’s not full team training, so that’s the best basis on which we’ve got to make the decision.

“And then as from midnight tonight, they can be freely back with the group.”

Mount has become a pivotal part of Southgate’s England plans and pressed whether he would be a serious contender to start after a week out, the Three Lions manager added: “Clearly it is really complicated because there is the physical periodisation that you would want for a game like this and then there is the tactical training and the meetings we have, they had to be in a separate room and dial in on Zoom.

“So the whole experience for them including travelling down tonight is very, very difficult. They are young players who I think can get on with things well.

“As I said, it is a decision I have to take when we are looking at how they have been able to train and everything else. There is a lot wrapped up in that call.”
