England break duck before exit

Alex Nimely grabbed a last-gasp equaliser to earn England a draw against Uzbekistan in their final group fixture at the U20 World Cup - but it was not enough to stop Brian Eastwick's flops crashing out.

England went into the match having not scored in their previous eight matches at the tournament - a run that has extended for 12 years.

Eastwick's troops lost their opening match 1-0 to Uruguay before suffering a 4-0 thumping at the hands of group winners Ghana.

England started brightly with Nimely coming close twice early on but were unable to make the breakthrough before half-time.

And the Three Lions continued to press after the break, with Febien Brandy's low right-foot shot skidding just wide of the left-hand post

But England were caught by the classic sucker punch and Uzbekistan scored on the counter-attack with 77 minutes on the clock

Substitutes Kenja Turaev and Ivan Nagaev combined to allow the latter to slot home.

And Turaev nearly added a second four minutes when he forced Elliot Parish to make a superb save.

But England produced a late rally to salvage some pride when Nimely burst through and rifled the ball into the roof of the net.

It was England's first goal in 849 minutes of under-20 World Cup football and it was nearly followed by another just seconds later.

Parish charged forward for a late corner but when the ball dropped to him eight yards out, the England keeper blazed his shot high and wide.

Uruguay drew with Ghana 2-2 in the other match as both teams booked their passage to the quarter-finals - but England finished bottom of Group D.
