Experienced wings Jonny May and Jack Nowell have been selected in an otherwise inexperienced England squad as they continue their preparations for the Australia tour.

May missed the whole Six Nations campaign while Nowell has consistently struggled with injury over the past few years.

The Exeter Chiefs man featured for the Red Rose during the recent international tournament but broke his arm in the final match against France.

However, he made a try-scoring return in Exeter’s thrilling 47-38 Premiership victory over Harlequins on Saturday.

16 uncapped players

Those two, alongside back-row Tom Curry, are the most experienced players within the group, with Jones selecting 16 uncapped individuals.

Most notably, Biyi Alo, Charlie Atkinson, Freddie Clarke, Sam Jeffries and Patrick Schicklerling make first appearances in the squad.

Players from the four Premiership semi-finalists have not been considered, with an updated squad to be announced next week ahead of the Barbarians fixture.

England boss Jones said: “With a number of players unavailable because of the Premiership semi-finals, we’ve got the opportunity to call up some new players.

“It’s a great opportunity to learn about them and see what potential they have to play a part in the Australia tour.

“We look forward to continuing the good work from our last camp in developing this team on and off the pitch.”
