England Lions hold off Sri Lanka A to draw unofficial Test in Galle
The hosts had resumed at 580-3, with Nishan Madushka having made an unbeaten double century. Captain Nipun Dhananjaya, 89 overnight, chalked up his own hundred, eventually out for 128 when bowled by Liam Patterson-White, before Madushka finally departed on 241 when caught by Matt Fisher off Jack Carson. England then soon cleared up the remaining batters, as Sri Lanka slumped from 654-4 at Dhananjaya's dismissal to 663-9 when the declaration came, with Carson finishing with four wickets. Chasing 333 for victory, England, who had made 467 in their first innings, lost opener Alex Lees edging behind in the second over and were soon two down when Tom Haines was caught and bowled by Milan Rathnayake. A half-century for Josh Bohannon and a resolute 43 from Jack Haynes, who were both later trapped lbw by Rathnayake, helped push England on to 141-4 at tea. Patterson-White added 25 before he was run out, while Jamie Smith finished unbeaten on 39 as England were 221-7 from 48 overs at stumps.
