Following an awful 30-29 defeat to Argentina in their Autumn Nations Series Test at Twickenham on Sunday, here are the player ratings for England.

15 Freddie Steward: Not his best day in difficult conditions. Surprisingly dropped a few high balls and didn’t look steady all day. 5

14 Jack Nowell: A couple of indents but failed to really break free from Argentina’s impressive defence. 5

13 Manu Tuilagi: Some good carries and a few big shots on defence, but limited involvement. 6

12 Owen Farrell (c): The partnership with Marcus Smith is not yet truly working. Kicked well enough but there was confusion in attack, leading to Argentina’s second try. 5

11 Joe Cokanasiga: England’s most potent back. Scored a nice try and was a constant threat, so will no doubt be dropped for their next Test. 7

10 Marcus Smith: Struggled to find any sort of fluency alongside Farrell. Spotted a couple of things off the cuff, which was good to see and also made a nice break, but not much else. 6

9 Ben Youngs: Smith and Farrell certainly weren’t helped by their scrum-half. Youngs was slow, indecisive and inaccurate. The contrast between him and his replacement was stark. 3

Forwards struggle to make impact

8 Billy Vunipola: Some good carries but also a few errors. Needs to be much better. 5

7 Tom Curry: Surprisingly ineffectual. Made his tackles and also carried hard but didn’t make any indents. 5

6 Maro Itoje: Some good things but he isn’t a flanker at the moment. 6

5 Jonny Hill: Anonymous. Made no impact against a resilient Argentina side. 4

4 Alex Coles: Impressive on debut, especially considering what the rest of the team produced. Carried well, made a couple of half breaks and was useful in the lineout. 7

3 Kyle Sinckler: Mixed from the tighthead. Carried hard but also a few bad decisions. 6

2 Luke Cowan-Dickie: A poor game from the hooker, who conceded some brainless penalties. 4

1 Ellis Genge: Scrummaged well and unfortunate with Andrew Brace’s interpretations as he was on top. 7

Replacements: Certainly a mixed bag. Jack van Poortvliet was brilliant but otherwise it wasn’t great, especially the two props, who faltered in the set-piece. 6
