Having trailled 2-0 to Germany, England clawed their way back before taking the lead only for Kai Havertz to score his second goal of the evening and ensure a share of the spoils. Telegraph Sport runs the rule over Gareth Southgate's starting XI after the 3-3 draw at Wembley.

Nick Pope

Was forced into an error when Jamal Musiala closed him down and was rushed into another clearance as Germany looked to make him pass long. No chance with goals and was at fault for Kai Havertz's second. 5/10

John Stones

Suffered an injury to his right hamstring on a run forward after helping play out from the back. He had started the game well and was looking to break into midfield when he saw gaps open up. 6/10

Eric Dier

Got his head onto crosses thrown into the penalty area, eventually could not prevent Germany overpowering. Has still played his way into the thinking for a starting place at the World Cup. 6/10

Harry Maguire

Awful mistake to give ball away to Musiala and give away penalty. Then lost ball for Havertz's first goal. Earlier faced boos but fans also sang his name when he blocked chances and clear. 4/10

Reece James

Always in the game as an outlet for his team-mates as they tried to play out of defence. Got into the game more in the second half and delivered crosses. 7/10

Declan Rice

Won possession in dangerous areas to set up transitions, then as game went on he drove his team forward more after initial work was mainly defensive. 8/10

Jude Bellingham

Fouled intelligently by German players when he tried to get into space. Then made more room for himself. Looked like a goal threat when the ball fell to him on the edge of the penalty area then won spot-kick. 8/10

Luke Shaw

Excellent pass to Sterling in the first half, behind the Germany defence, showed what he was capable of going forward and then finished well to get England back into game. 7/10

Raheem Sterling

England’s main goal threat got behind the German defence and had a one-on-one saved. Signs that his team-mates are starting to understand his attacking runs again. 7/10

Harry Kane

Took penalty confidently. Went down in the second minute clutching his ankle. He continued but Southgate will be counting on him staying fit as attacks go through the captain. 7/10

Phil Foden

After such a long time without an England goal from open play, he started to combine with his team-mates and his timing was just off but must hope it clicks in Qatar. 5 /10
