England are on the brink of qualifying for next year’s Qatar World Cup, despite being denied a sixth straight qualifying win by a stoppage-time equaliser in Poland.

Substitute Damian Szymanski headed home at the back post in the 92nd minute to earn Poland a point in front of 56,000 jubilant home fans here in Warsaw.

Earlier, Harry Kane scored his 41st England goal – moving clear of Michael Owen as his country’s fifth all-time top scorer – with a superb dipping strike in the 72nd minute.

England remain on course to top Group I, with qualifiers against Andorra, Hungary, Albania and San Marino to come before the end of the year.

Dan Kilpatrick was at Stadion Narodowy to run the rule over the England players...

Jordan Pickford 6

Nearly guilty of an embarrassing error when he dawdled on the ball and his clearance struck Karol Swiderski.

Helpless for the goal and quick off his line to smother a Robert Lewandowski chance in the first half.

Kyle Walker 6

Lewandowski's cross for the winner came from his side. The more reserved of the two full-backs and did relatively little going forward, aside from one great ball to Sterling.

Luke Shaw 6

Beaten in the air by Szymanski for Poland’s equaliser. Got forward intelligently and put in a couple of dangerous crosses, including a free-kick which Maguire headed onto the post.

Harry Maguire 7

All at sea for Poland’s goal, having coped well with their dangerous front two until then. Headed Shaw’s free-kick onto the base of the upright.

Booked for handbags with Kamil Glik after the half-time whistle.

John Stones 7

Allowed Lewandowski to bundle his way to a half-chance in the first half but otherwise stood up well to the Bayern Munich striker, despite sustaining a knock in the first half.

Kalvin Phillips 7

Harshly booked early on but comfortably walked the tightrope. Kept it simple as usual, and tested Wojciech Szczesny with an effort from range, but Jude Bellingham would have been a more progressive pick.

Declan Rice 7

Protected the back four with the usual minimum fuss and picked up Poland talisman Lewandowski when he dropped deep.

Mason Mount 6

Drifted in and out of the game and did not do enough with the ball. Curled a wild effort wide from a good position in the first half.

Jack Grealish 7

Provided a spark and won plenty of fouls. Nearly broke the deadlock with a teasing cross-cum-shot at the start of the second half.

Gareth Southgate may have been most pleased by a great piece of defensive work, when he raced back to win a tackle.

Raheem Sterling 7

Too often took too many touches in dangerous positions but was nonetheless lively and a threat. Created a chance for Kane with a deep cross.

Harry Kane 8

Scored with a dipping, swerving strike to break the deadlock. Had earlier miscued a header from Sterling’s cross but more than made amends with a goal in a 15th consecutive qualifier.

Subs not used: Johnstone, Pope, Trippier, Henderson, Coady, Saka, Alexander-Arnold, Lingard, James, Bellingham, Bamford.
