England rugby union international arrested on suspicion of rape

An England rugby union player has been arrested on suspicion of raping a teenager at the weekend.

The unnamed player was arrested on Sunday morning, following an alleged incident at a nightclub the previous evening.

He was questioned by officers, along with a 41-year-old woman, who police suspect of administering a substance with the intent to cause a sexual offence. Both have since been released on bail while police further investigate.

The RFU were today not commenting on the situation, due to it being an ongoing police matter.

In a statement given to the Daily Mail, a Greater Manchester police spokesperson said: “Officers were called shortly before 11am on Sunday to a report of a sexual assault on a female.

“A woman in her late teens was reported to have been sexually assaulted. She is currently being supported by specialist officers.

“A man was arrested on suspicion of rape and a women was arrested on suspicion of administering a substance with intent to cause a sexual offence.

“Both have since been released on bail as enquiries continue and a number of lines of enquiry are being followed up.”

The player in question was not expected to be part of Eddie Jones’s plans for the upcoming Six Nations.
