England 32-15 Australia LIVE! Blamire try - Autumn Nations Series 2021 rugby result, match stream and latest updates today

England vs Australia - LIVE!

England chalked up an eighth successive victory over Australia as tries for Freddie Steward and Jamie Blamire helped settled a penalty-ridden game and give the hosts a 32-15 win.

Eddie Jones’ side made most of the running in the first half and scored a superb try through fullback Steward after seven minutes but as both teams conceded a succession of penalties, Farrell and James O’Connor punished each other from the tee to keep it tight at 16-12 at half-time.

The ragged, indisciplined nature continued in the second half. Australia were hit with two yellow cards in the game, one in each half, and neither side really threatening the tryline.

But England remained in the ascendency throughout, keeping their opponents pinned back but without delivering the killer blow.

Farrell went off injured after landing five penalties and a conversion, and Marcus Smith added another penalty to stretch the lead, before replacement hooker Blamire sent the home fans wild when he galloped in from 60 metres in the final minute.

FT: England 32-15 Australia

19:26 , Matt Verri

Job. Done.

Marcus Smith adds the extras with a lovely conversion, and England have the win.

It was tight for a long time on the scoreboard, but the action on the pitch was far more in England’s favour.

Late try reflects that a bit more.

Penalty! England 30-15 Australia | Jamie Blamire 80’

19:25 , Matt Verri

HE’S DONE IT AGAIN!

Jamie Blamire has a fourth try in four matches. England have sealed the win in style!

Australia looked like they were going to score themselves, but Simmonds is alert to claim the ball and he breaks away. Blamire is inside, and he runs it in nice and easily.

19:22 , Matt Verri

78 mins: England threaten to add their second try of the match, Slade running dangerously in the 22, but Australia rip it away from him.

Scrum for Australia, deep in their 22. Not where they want to be with just a minute or so remaining.

19:20 , Matt Verri

77 mins: Australia free-kick taken quickly. And all they do is quickly give England a penalty, Beale making a mess of an attempted kick and they are penalised for offside.

England surely have this pretty much done now.

19:19 , Matt Verri

76 mins: Sam Simmonds the final England change as he returns to the international set-up, in place of Lawes. Eight subs made by both sides.

Australia scrum on halfway... and once again, collapses. We’ll start all over agin.

19:17 , Matt Verri

74 mins: Freddie Steward shanks his kick, and it goes straight out. Australia will have the lineout.

Charlie Ewels on for England, in place of Hill.

Australia claim the lineout, and have the ball in the England half.

Penalty! England 25-15 Australia | Marcus Smith 73'

19:15 , Matt Verri

Easy work for Smith. Big, big moment.

Australia now need a converted try AND and a penalty just to get level.

19:14 , Matt Verri

72 mins: Raffi Quirke on for his England debut, at the age of just 20. He’ll be hoping to see this out nice and comfortably for England!

Trevor Davison also brought on.

Marcus Smith now on kicking duties, with the chance to put England 10 points ahead.

19:13 , Matt Verri

71 mins: Bit of a kicking battle.... and England come out on top, thanks to a penalty.

Nice White penalised for obstruction. Looks a bit harsh.

19:09 , Matt Verri

68 mins: England win the penalty from the scrum. Bevan Rodd and Jonny Hill really celebrate that.

Oli Hoskins on for Australia, Slipper off. Farrell limps off for England, Max Malins replaces him.

19:07 , Matt Verri

66 mins: More handling errors from Australia, and England have the scrum. Sloppy performance from the visitors on the whole, but they’re only a converted try away from levelling this up.

Penalty! England 22-15 Australia | Owen Farrell 65'

19:05 , Matt Verri

The England captain makes up for his previous miss, straight through the middle of the posts.

England seven points up.

Will Macpherson at Twickenham

19:04 , Matt Verri

It really is quite incredible that England don’t have more of a lead. Farrell has a chance to extend it by another three points here.

19:04 , Matt Verri

64 mins: England scrum then, just outside Australia’s 22. Big chance.

Everyone sort of stops as it falls apart, penalty England. Referee lets the advantage go for a bit, but there’s nothing coming from it.

Sinckler with nice hands again, combining with Smith. He takes the chance to watch the replays in the ground.

19:01 , Matt Verri

62 mins: To say that wasn’t straight would be an understatement. Free-kick England.

Marcus Smith launches it upfield, and Australia will have to build from deep. They can’t do it... Beale can’t gather a pass from Paisami, knock on.

18:59 , Matt Verri

61 mins: And that decision has really backfired... penalty against Sinckler, penalty Australia!

Replays suggest that was a bit generous, but the visitors do not care one bit. They have a lineout in the England 22.

18:58 , Matt Verri

60 mins: England get the chance of scrum or lineout... they go for the scrum.

Not too convinced with the start Blamire has made, it would appear. First scrum is a complete mess, we’ll go again.

18:56 , Matt Verri

Or not! TMO tells the referee to have a look at an earlier tackle from Samu.

And the decision is reversed, penalty for England.

18:55 , Matt Verri

58 mins: Lawes penalised, and Australia will have a great chance to cut the deficit to just one point.

Not sure how they’ve kept it this tight, but they have!

18:53 , Matt Verri

56 mins: Farrell and Slade with quick hands... the latter tries to flick it on to where England have numbers, but there’s no space to go with those numbers.

Forced out for a lineout. Australia doing a good job of slowing things down while they only have 14 men. Again.

18:52 , Matt Verri

55 mins: Michael Hooper is forced off with injury, that’s a big blow for Australia.

Pete Samu on in his place... huge boots to fill.

Penalty missed!

18:50 , Matt Verri

54 mins: Well then. Farrell pulls it wide, and England do not extend their lead to a converted try.

There ends the kicking clinic.

18:48 , Matt Verri

52 mins: England lose another lineout, as Lawes can’t gather.

Luckily for them, Australia give them a penalty about 20 seconds later. Great work from Curry.

Farrell to take centre stage once again.

18:47 , Matt Verri

51 mins: Blamire with the lineout... Itoje just about claims this time. And England win the penalty, Rodda jumping across.

England back into the Australian 22. They’ve spent so much time here in the match, but they haven’t made it count.

Yet.

Penalty! England 19-15 Australia | Owen Farrell 49'

18:45 , Matt Verri

Just outside the 22, very central... easy work for the England captain.

England four points in front once again, and now is the time for them to push on.

Will Macpherson at Twickenham

18:44 , Matt Verri

England have to make this yellow card advantage count now. Angus Bell was late and tippy.

Yellow Card - Angus Bell 48'

18:43 , Matt Verri

Australia down to 14 men again!

Dangerous tackle from Bell, tipped his man over, and the officials decide that has to be a yellow.

18:42 , Matt Verri

48 mins: Youngs, Smith, Underhill... England are five metres away from the line. They have the advantage too.

Smith tries something clever, knowing he has the advantage, but it comes to nothing. Back for the penalty.

TMO checking a couple of tackles too...

18:41 , Matt Verri

47 mins: TRY..... NO!

Australia have somehow held it up. Jonny Hill was charging at the defence, his teammates helped the cause, but somehow the Australians have prevented the try.

Will Macpherson at Twickenham

18:38 , Matt Verri

How are England only a point in front? They need to be mighty careful here.

18:38 , Matt Verri

44 mins: Blamire’s first lineout after coming on... it’s not his best, not straight.

This has been a promising start to the half for Australia. Itoje claims a high ball that bounces loose, and England can try and settle into it again.

Penalty! England 16-15 Australia | James O’Connor 43'

18:36 , Matt Verri

O’Connor does just that. Ill-discipline continues to halt England from taking control of this match.

18:35 , Matt Verri

42 mins: First penalty of the half, and it’s for Australia. Maro Itoje off his feet.

James O’Connor with the chance to get his side within a point.

18:33 , Matt Verri

Players are indeed back out... minus Jamie George.

He was injured in that remarkable tackle to deny him from scoring a try. Jamie Blamire on in his place.

WE’RE OFF!

18:30 , Matt Verri

Players will shortly be back out for the second-half.

Four point game, despite England seemingly being on the verge of overwhelming Australia at times.

Big second 40 minutes to come.

Will Macpherson at Twickenham

18:21 , Matt Verri

That was a good half of rugby from England, but the scoreboard doesn’t really show it. They will feel they have left a few points out there having had all the territory and possession.

HALF-TIME

18:20 , Matt Verri

And that is half-time. England lead 16-12.

England have been on top for much of it, but some strong defence and the boot of James O’Connor has kept Australia right in it.

Penalty! England 16-12 Australia | James O’Connor 40'

18:17 , Matt Verri

40 mins: Another penalty for Australia, offside this time, and they will go for the posts.

Will pretty much take us to half-time, and the visitors have survived with 14 men. They’ve done more than that... they’ve now closed the deficit back to four points!

O’Connor with another great kick.

18:15 , Matt Verri

38 mins: Australia win a penalty from it! Great work, England penalised for standing up. James Slipper loved that one.

18:14 , Matt Verri

37 mins: Australia have been on the ropes, but they’ve done really well to keep England at bay while they’re down to 14.

England scrum, and it’s safe to say the visitors are not in a rush to join. Both teams at fault, and we will have to start all over again.

18:11 , Matt Verri

35 mins: WOW.

Jamie George steps inside, and he is seemingly destined to go over a try.

But as he drops down to touch the ball down, Nic White comes flying under him and knocks the ball away. Sensational defence. How have England not scored a try from that?!

18:10 , Matt Verri

34 mins: Another advantage, another penalty. Australia hanging on for dear life. Ben Youngs thinks he’s taken it quickly and gone over for a try... referee does not.

Back to the 5m line for a lineout we go. Australia have now conceded 10 penalties already.

Will Macpherson at Twickenham

18:09 , Matt Verri

Some of the hands so far from England’s forwards, especially Kyle Sinckler, have been sublime.

18:09 , Matt Verri

33 mins: England really pressing, Smith getting more and more of the ball now.

Advantage England for a high tackle on Curry... and we came back for that. Hosts not entirely sure what to do here. Farrell kicks to touch.

The crowd like that a lot.

Penalty! England 16-9 Australia | Owen Farrell 30’

18:06 , Matt Verri

Farrell takes the easy points, and England are back to a converted try in front.

They’ll be looking to really make the most of this period before half-time with the extra man now.

Yellow Card - Tom Wright 30'

18:06 , Matt Verri

Twickenham crowd doing their bit for the English cause, plenty of outraged jeers from the crowd as the big screen shows the replays.

It’s a yellow card for the Australian winger. Fact he held his ground reduced the level of danger, according to the referee, and saves him from getting a red.

Will Macpherson at Twickenham

18:04 , Matt Verri

That was a stunning line from Jamie George, and a great pass from Courtney Lawes. Perhaps he should have backed himself a bit more. Hang on, we have a TMO check here.

18:04 , Matt Verri

30 mins: Jamie George is clean through after great hands by Lawes. He runs for his life, but Beale is there waiting for him.

Tom Wright could be in big trouble though, shoulder into George’s face as Beale tackled the England forward.

They will check this...

18:02 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Steward taken out in the air by O’Connor, and that will be a penalty. Australian fly-half didn’t go into him with any speed, just sort of barged into him as Steward landed.

Slade’s boot gets England up the pitch.

Will Macpherson at Twickenham

18:01 , Matt Verri

It does not feel like England are where they should be on the scoreboard. They have played all the rugby, but wasted an opportunity in Australia’s 22, and given away a few penalties in their own.

17:59 , Matt Verri

27 mins: Folau Fainga’a off his feet, and England have another penalty. Easy territory for England, another kick and another lineout deep in the Australian half.

Marcus Smith is absolutely crunched by Hunter Paisami, and knocks on as he’s tackled.

17:57 , Matt Verri

25 mins: Henry Slade kicks for touch, very ambitious, but very good! Lineout England, about 7m out from the tryline.

Monstrous drive from Australia pushes the maul back though. England work it wide, it’s Slade... it’s May... tackled out of play.

Slade and May seemed to have the numbers and space, but Australia got back really well.

17:56 , Matt Verri

23 mins: Scrum England... can always rely on the scrum to bring a grinding halt to proceedings.

Ben Youngs waits... Australia collapse it, penalty England.

Penalty! England 13-9 Australia | James O’Connor 21'

17:54 , Matt Verri

Easy enough for O’Connor, who keeps up his perfect record early in this match.

Breathless start to this match, plenty of errors. Good and bad on show from both sides so far.

17:52 , Matt Verri

20 mins: England again make a mess of the restart, and Australia are very nearly in for a try. O’Connor’s kick through doesn’t quite have enough on it to reach Kellaway.

They come again though... Kurtley Beale’s pass is too heavy and Michael Hooper can’t stretch to claim it.

We’ll come back though, for ANOTHER penalty. Australia to close the cap to four again...

Penalty! England 13-6 Australia | Owen Farrell 18'

17:50 , Matt Verri

Izack Rodda joins the party in giving away a penalty, and England kick to touch inside the Australian 22.

Line-out worked well, and England win another penalty. And this one pretty much is under the posts... another simple three points coming up for Farrell.

England back to seven points in front.

Penalty! England 10-6 Australia | James O’Connor 15'

17:47 , Matt Verri

No shortage of points at Twickenham!

England concede a penalty straight from the restart, Australia opt to go for the posts, and O’Connor makes no mistake.

That will frustrate Eddie Jones a bit, to give three points straight back.

Will Macpherson at Twickenham

17:46 , Matt Verri

The numbers on England’s backs’ backs are a little irrelevant at the moment. Owen Farrell is mainly first receiver, Henry Slade is playing as a second full-back, and Manu Tuilagi is popping up everywhere.

PENALTY! England 10-3 Australia | Owen Farrell 13’

17:45 , Matt Verri

A bit more to the right of the posts than it first looked, but it’s a simple enough kick anyway for Farrell.

Great response from England to the early penalty.

17:44 , Matt Verri

12 mins: Tuilagi with another powerful run, England really pushing. Underhill puts another dent in the Australian defence.

Referee brings an end to the advantage, penalty England right under the posts. They will take the points.

17:43 , Matt Verri

10 mins: England penalty on the halfway line. Wonderful kick from Farrell, gets his side up to the 10m line in the Australian 22.

They’ll fancy another go at the tryline from here...

Will Macpherson at Twickenham

17:42 , Matt Verri

As starts for “New England” go, Marcus Smith setting up Freddie Steward is a pretty good one. Farrell converts and England lead.

TRY! England 7-3 Australia | Freddie Steward 7’

17:40 , Matt Verri

Brilliant try from England!

Lawes and Underhill combined well to make crucial metres. Smith then picks it up, out to Steward, and he steps inside nicely to dive over the tryline. Tuilagi was there to his left, but he didn’t need him.

Easy conversion for Farrell.

17:37 , Matt Verri

6 mins: Kellaway makes a complete mess of the high ball, and England will get their first chance to launch an attack.

Doesn’t come to anything, but England will get the scrum for the knock-on.

Penalty! England 0-3 Australia | James O’Connor

17:35 , Matt Verri

5 mins: First penalty for Australia, and they decide they will kick for the post and try and get themselves on the scoreboard early on.

James O’Connor... 10m inside the England half... perfect. That will be a nice confidence booster for the fly-half, and the Australian team as a whole.

17:33 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Australia with the early possession. Jonny May has to drop deep into his own 22 to claim a long kick, and he does well to clear himself and get England up beyond the half-way line.

WE’RE OFF!

17:31 , Matt Verri

Marcus Smith kicks us off. We’re underway!

Anthems done

17:29 , Matt Verri

We are just about ready for kick-off at Twickenham!

Will Macpherson has given his verdict on the anthems: “As ever, it’s advantage Australia after the anthems.”

Will it be eight in a row over Australia for England, or can the visitors break that run?

Will Macpherson at Twickenham

17:25 , Matt Verri

Maro Itoje leads England out on his 50th cap. Has six more for the Lions, too. Hell of a player.

Kick-off very nearly here!

17:24 , Matt Verri

Players out, Last Post now being played and a minute’s silence to be observed.

Then the national anthems... and then we’ll be underway!

Will Macpherson at Twickenham

17:22 , Matt Verri

Enormous cheer for Marcus Smith’s name as the team is read out. Tells a tale.

Will Macpherson at Twickenham

17:16 , Matt Verri

There’s a proper buzz about the place as fans file in and the players warm up. Just over 15 minutes until kick off.

Eddie Jones pre-match thoughts

17:11 , Matt Verri

Eddie Jones confirms Owen Farrell will be kicking today, despite Marcus Smith starting at fly-half.

Also says Manu Tuilagi will be playing a number of positions - not too keen to expand on that either!

Smith at 10

16:53 , Matt Verri

Plenty of excitement around Marcus Smith, as there always is.

He was brilliant coming off the bench against Tonga last weekend. He starts this evening, and can he produce the same level of performance despite the step-up in opposition?

We shall soon find out.

Farrell back in town

16:48 , Matt Verri

Will Macpherson at Twickenham

16:36 , Matt Verri

Twickenham is a totally different experience with fans. It’s hard to overestimate how bleak and soulless this place was behind closed doors. Today has that wonderful Big Match feel for the first time in a while.

England should win today. Australia are a little patched together after all the withdrawals. England have an exciting look about them, with Smith at 10 and Manu Tuilagi employed in this slightly strange roaming role.

Prediction

16:26 , Matt Verri

With Farrell back and home support behind them, England should have enough in the tank to claim the win.

The Aussies haven’t won the Cook Cup since 2012, with their only win since in 2015 when they upset England’s home World Cup hopes. With the hosts on a seven-game winning run in matches between the sides, expect that to turn to eight on Saturday.

England win.

Australia team news

16:07 , Matt Verri

For the visitors, Jordan Petaia is out with a hamstring injury and Taniela Tupou also missed out after suffering a concussion in the defeat to Scotland.

Replacements: Tolu Latu, Tom Robertson, Oliver Hoskins, Will Skelton, Pete Samu, Tate McDermott, Noah Lolesio, Izaia Perese

England team news

15:57 , Matt Verri

England are without Joe Marler after his positive test for coronavirus, with replacement prop Bevan Rodd brought in by Eddie Jones and given a start straight away.

Ellis Genge also tested positive and is in self-isolation.

Marcus Smith is selected at fly-half with Owen Farrell at 12, while Manu Tuilagi is a surprise inclusion on the wing.

England XV: Freddie Steward, Manu Tuilagi, Henry Slade, Owen Farrell (captain), Jonny May, Marcus Smith, Ben Youngs, Bevan Rodd, Jamie George, Kyle Sinckler, Maro Itoje, Jonny Hill, Courtney Lawes, Sam Underhill, Tom Curry
