Former India cricketer WV Raman believes the expectations on Indian skipper Virat Kohli are very high and the spotlight is always shining on the 32-year-old batsman. Raman feels the Kohli can’t necessarily be faulted with what’s happening but expects him to hit his stride very soon.

Virat Kohli has been off his usual best for the past couple of years. He has looked good sporadically but has failed to live up to his standards. Granted the benchmark he has set is very high but Indian fans are disappointed with the way Kohli has been getting out in the England series so far.

Addressing the issue, Raman stated that Kohli is one of the best in the business. He also gave an example of Sachin Tendulkar’s good knocks would be disregarded if he failed to score a century.

See we cannot really fault him. What can generally be the norm in life and other spheres might not apply in cricket always. I mean, what has happened is, there is a lot of pressure on Virat himself.”

We pay a lot of attention to everything he does. We know he is one of the best batsmen so we expect a lot from him. It’s similar to how it was with Sachin Tendulkar when he was playing. Even 95 was considered a failure,” Raman pointed out.

“Nudge others and lead from behind” – WV Raman’s advice to Virat Kohli

While England’s skipper Joe Root has been the perfect example of leading from the front, his counterpart Kohli has seldom been able to do so in this calendar year. There needs to be a change in mindset and for once, Kohli should try to let the others lead the way, as per Raman.

If I was Virat’s coach, I would tell him: ‘Virat, enough of this leading from the front. Just try and nudge the others from behind and get them to do what they can deliver. I’m sure you’ll be back at your best in no time.’ He did show shades of his old game/fluency in the last innings.

I’m sure he will definitely do well in the next two Test matches. As a leader I’ll tell him, you need to discard and forget this thing of leading from the front. Nudge others and lead from behind,” WV Raman concluded.

The stakes are high in the last two Tests and Kohli is known to thrive in such situations. The series is level at 1-1, with the fourth Test starting on September 2 at The Oval.
