As Jasprit Bumrah rattled Ollie Pope’s stumps, on Day 5 of the Oval Test, he completed a set of 100 wickets in Test cricket.

Such has been his rise, since playing his debut Test in 2018, in England, that it took him 24 Tests to achieve this landmark, making him the fastest Indian fast bowler to do so – Kapil Dev took his 100th wickets in his 25th Test; Irfan Pathan did it in his 28th and Mohammed Shami in his 29th Test match.

Not only that, his ascend as arguably India’s greatest fast bowler is illustrated by the fact that he has the best average (22.79 after taking his 101st wicket) among all Indian bowlers to have taken over 100 Test wickets – more than R Ashwin (24.56), Ravindra Jadeja (24.96), Kapil Dev (29.64), and Anil Kumble (29.65).

India take all 10 English wickets on Day 5 at The Oval taking 2-1 lead

For the second time in the series, India have taken all 10 English wickets on the fifth day of the game after the Lord’s Test as Virat Kohli’s side take an unassailable 2-1 series lead with the final Test in Manchester left to play.

It was Shardul Thakur who started the procession early in the morning removing Rory Burns after the batsman raised his fifty. Dawid Malan ran himself out ahead of Lunch.

India then went on to take 6 wickets in the second session. Ravindra Jadeja got rid of half-centurion Haseeb Hameed and Moeen Ali. In between those two wickets, Jasprit Bumrah burst through the defences of Ollie Pope and Jonny Bairstow.

Thakur returned to claim the wicket of Root before Umesh Yadav dismissed Chris Woakes at the stroke of Tea. Yadav wrapped things up quickly in the third session with two more to his name – that of Craig Overton and James Anderson.
