Indian batsman Rohit Sharma was all smiles after receiving the Man of the Match award for his brilliant hundred in the second innings. It was also his first overseas century and his eighth hundred overall in Test cricket.

Rohit scored a brilliant 127 off 256 balls which set the platform for the Indian team’s lower-order to capitalize on. The knock was a very fluent one and included 14 fours and a six. Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, Rohit said:

I try to contribute for the team, it’s important to me. I know the importance of opening the innings. I am glad to make it count. It’s always important to embrace the challenge, it’s not going to be easy.

Back in Durham, we had time off to look at our training and technique and after the World Test Championship final we had 20-25 days, that was a real game-changer.

“Really glad to get the team into an important position” – Rohit Sharma

India was trailing by 99 runs when the second innings began. The openers KL Rahul and Rohit provided a great start but it was Rohit’s partnership with Cheteshwar Pujara that set the juices flowing for the team.

“That hundred was special. We know how important was the second innings. Virat just mentioned the effort from the batsmen, as a unit it was really important. It’s my first overseas hundred.

Really glad that I could get the team into an important position. The three-figure mark wasn’t on my mind, we knew the pressure on the batting unit so we kept our heads down batted [according to] the situation. Once we got the lead, we just wanted to put pressure on the bowlers,” Rohit added.

Rohit continues his good form in the series and is the second highest-scorer from both teams after England skipper Joe Root.
