Team India pulled out all the stops on Day 5 of the fourth Test at Oval to beat England by 157 runs and take a lead of 2-1 in the series. It was a brilliant combined bowling effort from the visitors which ensured they will not be losing the series from here on.

The fifth day began with the game hanging on a knife’s edge. Either team could have nicked the game and the possibility of a draw or a tie was also alive. There was also the added pressure of making sure one does not fall behind in the series.

Overnight batsmen Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed continued to push England ahead and brought up their second 100-run partnership of the series. The moment Burns reached his fifty, he was dismissed by a lovely delivery from Shardul Thakur. Dawid Malan was run-out soon after which made the home team uncomfortable at lunch.

The dramatic collapse began in the second session. Ravindra Jadeja opened the floodgates when he knocked over the well set Hameed for 63. Jasprit Bumrah then produced a spell to remember (6-3-6-2) where he castled both Ollie Pope and Jonny Bairstow with pristine skill.

Moeen Ali’s stay at the crease was then cut short by Jadeja. Chris Woakes and skipper Joe Root built a small partnership before Thakur was brought in to deliver the killing blow. He got Root with a rather innocuous delivery which ended all hopes of resistance from the English side.

It was a mere formality from there on as India went on to bully the lower-order into submission and wrapped up the game by 157 runs. They go into the fifth and final Test in Manchester with a 2-1 lead in the series.

Twitterati was stunned by the way the English collapsed but heaped praise on the Indian bowlers who managed to extract something from a rather insipid track at the Oval.
