Former Indian player VVS Laxman opined that the late resurgence in Rohit Sharma’s Test career is a great example for youngsters. Rohit’s rise in Test cricket of late is attributed to his ability to keep learning and developing, as per Laxman.

On Saturday, in front of a packed crowd at Oval, Rohit raised the roof when he reached his maiden overseas Test hundred after lofting a Moeen Ali delivery over long-on for a huge six. It was his eighth hundred overall and Laxman lavished praise on the 34-year-old.

All the cricketers I talk to, even now they feel that they want to prove themselves in Test cricket. Rohit Sharma, who is an exceptional leader, has won IPL with MI four times, [and] has achieved success in white-ball cricket, whether T20’s or one-dayers.

But for him also he knows that at the end of his career when he hangs up his boots, he will be recognized as a great player if his performances in Tests matches his performances in white-ball cricket and that’s the case with a lot of cricketers I interact with,” Laxman mentioned.

“You never stop learning and adapting” – VVS Laxman on why Rohit Sharma’s Test career took off

Rohit made his debut in Tests only 6 years after he announced his arrival at the international level. Even then, he began as a middle-order batsman but got bumped up to the top after his stellar performances in white-ball cricket. His ability to adapt to the situation is what elevated him in Tests, according to Laxman.

Players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, Kane Williamson, and Joe Root are all role models. It’s a great thing for youngsters – you never stop learning, you never stop adapting. There is only one constant and that’s change.

All the great players I’ve played and [the ones] we’re watching them play, they’re always working on their game and striving to improve, and only then can they achieve excellence. So it’s a great story for youngsters to learn from,” Laxman concluded.

Rohit Sharma scored 127 off 256 balls, including 14 fours and a six in the third innings of the Oval Test against England.
