Rishabh Pant was finally caught at slip to end his innings (PA)

Rishabh Pant gave England a taste of their own medicine as his counter-attacking century flipped India’s fortunes on day one of their rearranged series decider at Edgbaston.

England were making all the running when they reduced their opponents to 98-5, but were taken apart by Pant’s rampant 146 off just 111 balls.

The wicketkeeper hit 19 fours and four sixes as he dominated a stand of 222 with Ravindra Jadeja (83no), smashing his way out of a sticky spot in the way England did on several occasions during their 3-0 whitewash of New Zealand.

England’s buccaneering methods have been dubbed ‘Bazball’ in honour of head coach Brendon McCullum, but Pant has always played the game at his own tempo and this was a timely reminder of his own maverick qualities.

India closed on 338-7 after Joe Root’s part-time spin finally ended Pant’s assault, James Anderson having taken three wickets and Matthew Potts the prize scalp of Virat Kohli.

Swashbuckling Rishabh Pant century turns India fortunes around against England

England vs India 338-7

19:06 , Luke Baker

A fascinating day’s cricket and it sets up another intriguing Test match. Hopefully the rain largely stays away although there is some forecast for tomorrow.

England got off to a rip-roaring start and reduced India to 98-5 with Jimmy Anderson taking three wickets and Matty Potts two.

But Rishabh Pant (146) and Ravindra Jadeja (83 no) rebuilt with a 200+ partnership and put India in control. England took two quick wickets late in the day as Pant was finally removed but India closed on 338-7. A day that was in the balance - maybe India with the slight edge?

STUMPS! India 338-7 (Jadeja 83*, Shami 0*) - 73 overs

19:01 , Luke Baker

At Lord’s last summer, Shami hit an unbeaten 56 as part of a great partnership with Bumrah that set India up for a famous win. He’s proven he can bat, so this strategy to completely protect him is rather odd.

Anyway, possibly the last over of the day or maybe two more at most. Jadeja and Shami have a chat in the middle to slow things down and make sure this is the last over.

That’s more like it from Jadeja - a classy flick through leg for FOUR! Too straight from Potts but classily dispatched. Perhaps a run out chance from the next ball but a shy at the stumps is wild and it races for FOUR overthrows. Shami then sees the rest of the over out.

And it is the final over of the day. STUMPS! India end on 338-7

India 329-7 (Jadeja 74*, Shami 0*) - 72 overs

18:56 , Luke Baker

There’s been a pattern in recent overs - fourth ball single from Jadeja and Shami then surviving two. Not the most aggressive strategy but I guess the aim is to get them through to close?

It happens again from this Stokes over, although Shami has a fish outside off from the fifth ball but can’t connect.

VIDEO: Stokes gets Thakur for his first wicket of the innings

18:53 , Luke Baker

Here’s how Stokes got Thakur as India’s seventh wicket fell

India 328-7 (Jadeja 73*, Shami 0*) - 71 overs

18:52 , Luke Baker

Flicked off the hips by Jadeja, past a diving Billings. Stopped short of the boundary for two - hard to tell if that was thigh pad or bat but it goes in the scorebook as bat.

Superb bowling by Potts as he angles one into the body and it beats the edge! Jadeja then takes a single to cover before Shami survives the final two balls. Around 10 minutes of action left today

REVIEW! India 325-7 (Jadeja 70*, Shami 0*) - 70 overs

18:48 , Luke Baker

Stokes continues with Jadeja on strike. A couple of singles turned down before Jadeja takes one. Then off the final delivery, Stokes thinks Shami has tickled one down leg side. APPEAL but umpire says no. England REVIEW but ultimately nothing showing on Ultra Edge.

VIDEO: England finally remove Rishabh Pant

18:43 , Luke Baker

It took a long time but here’s how England finally got rid of Rishabh Pant for 146. Nice ball by Root and well taken.

India 324-7 (Jadeja 69*, Shami 0*) - 69 overs

18:41 , Luke Baker

Mohammed Shami comes in at No 9. The onus is on Jadeja to push the scoring now you’d think.

Matty Potts back into the attack - Jadeja on strike and turns down a single off the second and third balls but does take one off the fourth delivery. Two balls for Shami to survive and he duly does

OUT! Thakur c Billings b Stokes 1. India 323-7

18:36 , Luke Baker

Another no-ball filled over for Stokes as he bowls two of them. But then with the final (eighth) delivery he gets his first wicket of the day!

A sharp bouncer surprises Thakur, it’s right in on his gloves and Billings tumbles forward to take the catch. the umpire thinks about it and gives it OUT! There was contact with the gloves.

Momentum back with England?

India 321-6 (Jadeja 68*, Thakur 1*) - 67 overs

18:28 , Luke Baker

Finally England can face a new batter as Shardul Thakur comes to the crease. Three dot balls and he takes a single into the covers from Root’s final delivery

OUT! Pant c Crawley b Root 146. India 320-6

18:27 , Luke Baker

Pant gets down the pitch and launches Root straight down the ground for SIX! A quick check to see if it’s four or six but replays confirm it landed on the rope.

But next ball he’s OUT! England finally get their man! Root puts one a bit wider and a bit slower, Pant looking to bring up his 150 but a thick edge from his big heave goes to Zak Crawley at slip. His third catch of the innings.

India 314-5 (Pant 140*, Jadeja 68*) - 66 overs

18:24 , Luke Baker

Pant faces one ball from Stokes and then needs some physio attention as he looks like he’s jarred his finger. He’s ok to continue though.

A few singles and another Stokes no-ball chucked into the mix for good measure.

India 310-5 (Pant 138*, Jadeja 67*) - 65 overs

18:16 , Luke Baker

A little bit of spin for Root but Jadeja can still chop him away for two. He then rides the bounce to steer another ball to the fence through backward point - FOUR!

The runs are mounting up and there’s no real chances being created by England.

200 PARTNERSHIP! India 304-5 (Pant 138*, Jadeja 61*) - 64 overs

18:13 , Luke Baker

Stokes still trundling in and Jadeja swivels to pull the ball for FOUR through square leg. That’s the 200 PARTNERSHIP between these two and 300 UP for India - an incredible feat. They’ve turned this match completely on its head.

India 299-5 (Pant 138*, Jadeja 56*) - 63 overs

18:10 , Luke Baker

Joe Root into the attack for the first time, to send down his tweakers.

A couple of singles before he is smashed over extra-cover for FOUR by Pant. Root then tries a bouncer (!) and Pant adapts well to feather the pull very fine for FOUR!

10 from the over.

India 289-5 (Pant 129*, Jadeja 55*) - 62 overs

18:04 , Luke Baker

How will England respond? India are completely on top here. A quite brilliant partnership by Pant and Jadeja.

Stokes opting for short and wide generally but that’s another overstepping no-ball. Very frustrating. In terms of runs from the bat, there’s only two, so not a disaster

SIX! India 286-5 (Pant 128*, Jadeja 54*) - 61 overs

18:02 , Luke Baker

This proves to be a disastrous over for Leach...

Firstly, Pant spanks one through square leg for FOUR! Then he launches a SIX over long-on as he takes two steps down the pitch.

Then it’s FOUR overthrows! Thrown back in and it’s wide of the keeper, racing away to the opposite boundary. From the final ball, it’s another mammoth SIX! This time one-handed over long-on - absolutely huge. 22 off the over...

India 264-5 (Pant 107*, Jadeja 53*) - 60 overs

17:56 , Luke Baker

Ben Stokes brings himself on to bowl and opens up with his customary no-ball for overstepping... Later in the over, it’s a no-ball on height and the final delivery is well down the leg side. Billings has no chance and that’s FOUR byes.

Turned into a very average over form Stokes despite nothing off the bat - six runs from it.

India 258-5 (Pant 107*, Jadeja 53*) - 59 overs

17:52 , Luke Baker

A single off the first ball before Pant crunches one through backward square for FOUR! Billing then drops one behind the stumps - was that an edge? Ultra Edge is inconclusive, so Billings gets away with one.

A couple more singles to finish off the Leach over.

VIDEO: Pant brings up a magical century

17:46 , Luke Baker

Rishabh Pant brought his ton after a majestic innings.

50 UP! India 251-5 (Pant 102*, Jadeja 51*) - 59 overs

17:42 , Luke Baker

Broad welcomes Pant to the 100 club with a bouncer that he hooks for one. Jadeja then edges a ball through the slip region for FOUR! Leach chases it but can’t get there in time.

Jadeja only a single away from his 50 and he gets it next ball with a budge to the off side. He’s supported Pant superbly. An 18th fifty in 60 Tests for Jadeja.

Pant then goes for another pull, which earns him one, before another single makes it 10 from the over.

That’s also DRINKS! A great final over pre-drinks for India - all happening.

CENTURY! India 243-5 (Pant 100*, Jadeja 45*) - 57.1 overs

17:39 , Luke Baker

It only took one ball of Broad’s over for Pant to reach his CENTURY! He pulls the ball fine to long leg and runs hard for two - a dive into his crease to make sure!

A quite brilliant ton - things were desperate when he came to the middle. That’s his 5th Test hundred and his 3rd against England. Lovely stuff.

India 241-5 (Pant 98*, Jadeja 45*) - 57 overs

17:37 , Luke Baker

Pant was more reserved to Leach in the previous over but not in this one... He absolutely charges down the wicket and spanks the spinner over midwicket for FOUR!

The next delivery is even more incredible, down the wicket again, slogs hard and somehow ends up on the floor but the ball is back over Leach’s head for another FOUR! Bizarre!

Single from the next ball and Jadeja then gets him back on strike but the final delivery is swept for just one. He’s on 98 - two from his century and on strike for the next over...

India 230-5 (Pant 88*, Jadeja 44*) - 56 overs

17:32 , Luke Baker

First ball of Broad’s over is pretty wide and Billings misses it when he dives but Joe Root wears it on the shin to prevent four byes! The former England skipper looked like he was trying to get out of the way of it in all honesty...

Later in the over there’s no stopping those FOUR leg byes though as Jadeja’s attempted clip misses but the ball races away regardless.

India 226-5 (Pant 88*, Jadeja 44*) - 55 overs

17:30 , Luke Baker

It’s spin time from the other end as Jack Leach enters the attack. Pant was smashing him to all parts prior to tea.

He’s more reserved initially this time, settling for a single worked around the corner. Jadeja then in defensive mode before another single off the final ball.

India 224-5 (Pant 87*, Jadeja 43*) - 54 overs

17:27 , Luke Baker

Broad into the attack in place of partner in crime Jimmy Anderson.

Pant nurdles a first-ball single but the rest of the over is very tight and there’s no more runs off it

India 223-5 (Pant 86*, Jadeja 43*) - 53 overs

17:20 , Luke Baker

First ball of the over is edged by Jadeja flashes hard and it goes for FOUR with no third man.

Jadeja then adds another two from the final ball - another six from the over.

India 217-5 (Pant 86*, Jadeja 37*) - 52 overs

17:14 , Luke Baker

Pant has no desire to hold back against Anderson either. First ball of the over and he steps down the track and clubs Anderson back over his head for FOUR! Remarkable batting. That wasn’t a bad ball by Anderson at all.

A couple more singles from the over to round things out.

India 211-5 (Pant 81*, Jadeja 37*) - 51 overs

17:11 , Luke Baker

Pant really has the measure of young Matty Potts here. Another FOUR and another great shot as a half-volley on the pads is flicked through midwicket.

A leg-side single before FOUR leg byes off Jadeja as Potts drifts to leg. Nine from the over

India 202-5 (Pant 76*, Jadeja 37*) - 50 overs

17:05 , Luke Baker

A cry of frustration from Jadeja as he fails to clear the infield with a clip to point. A good over from Anderson keeps him tied up and it’s the first maiden post-tea for England. Important to build that pressure.

India 202-5 (Pant 76*, Jadeja 37*) - 49 overs

17:03 , Luke Baker

Good bowling from Potts as he twice beats Jadeja’s outside edge in back-to-back deliveries. He then takes a single and Pant pounces.

Firstly he pulls the ball quite fine for FOUR and that’s also the 100 PARTNERSHIP UP between these two. The following ball also goes for FOUR as another pull races to the boundary. Incredible batting by this dynamo.

India 193-5 (Pant 68*, Jadeja 36*) - 48 overs

16:59 , Luke Baker

Wily old Jimmy Anderson continues in the attack. Pant reverse ramps him over the top of the slips for an audacious two! Think Joe Root in the final Test against New Zealand.

Anderson doesn’t look amused, perhaps unsurprisingly given that he’s only been reverse swept six times in Test cricket - three coming from the bat of Pant. Anderson responds with no other runs from the over though.

India 191-5 (Pant 66*, Jadeja 36*) - 47 overs

16:53 , Luke Baker

Potts roaring in and Pant looks like he fancies cashing in against the Durham man here. He pucnhes one for FOUR through the off side, perfectly finding the gap in the field and then bunts one down the ground that is well stopped by Stokes at mid-off.

He hooks a shorter ball but it finds Jack Leach in the deep, so just a single. Pant hobbles through the run and then feels his left hamstring - cramp perhaps?

India 186-5 (Pant 61*, Jadeja 36*) - 46 overs

16:48 , Luke Baker

Both of these men are capable of hitting the ball out of the park but classical cricket shots are the order of the day so far post-tea. Jadeja gets forward to drive an Anderson ball that is only slightly overpitched through the covers. That’s FOUR!

Good line and length from Anderson after that and no more runs from the over.

India 182-5 (Pant 61*, Jadeja 32*) - 45 overs

16:45 , Luke Baker

Matty Potts will bowl the first post-tea over for England. Pant is on strike.

First ball is aborted as Potts loses his run-up! Has more luck second time and a good first delivery as it bounces past Pant’s outside edge. Lovely response by Pant though as he drives the ball through the covers for FOUR!

Another glorious FOUR follows as he punches one through the point region. A great start to the final session of the day for India.

The state of play at tea

16:37 , Luke Baker

Here’s the state of play at tea. Who will take control in the final session?

TEA! India 174-5 (Pant 53*, Jadeja 32*) - 44 overs

16:18 , Luke Baker

Ben Stokes in for the final over before tea. Third and fourth no-balls of the day for him are thrown into the mix but other than that he’s pretty tight.

Just the two for the no-balls off the over and that’s TEA! England started the session like a train but Jadeja and Pant have rebuilt well.

50 UP! India 172-5 (Pant 53*, Jadeja 32*) - 43 overs

16:13 , Luke Baker

Jadeja takes a single and Pant is on strike on 49.

He pushes one to leg for no run before another flick races away to the legside boundary for FOUR! And that’s 50 UP for Pant! His 10th half-century in Test matches - coming from 51 balls. An important innings so far by Pant.

India 166-5 (Pant 49*, Jadeja 31*) - 42 overs

16:09 , Luke Baker

Nothing off the first three balls of Stokes’ over but the fourth delivery is a single and a no-ball to boot. Pant then guides the ball into the off side and although it won’t go to the boundary, India take three. Pant to 49. Another single off the last ball from Jadeja.

India 161-5 (Pant 46*, Jadeja 29*) - 41 overs

16:05 , Luke Baker

Leach remains in the attack and Jadeja respectfully blocks out most of the over before taking a single from the final ball.

India 160-5 (Pant 46*, Jadeja 28*) - 40 overs

16:02 , Luke Baker

The England captain brings himself into the attack for the first time. A big no-ball first up from Stokes and India also take a single but he then adjusts.

Pant flashes at a wide one but plays and misses before he takes two from a nudge into the covers. He then chops one behind square and it races away to the boundary for FOUR runs.

Eight from the over.

India 152-5 (Pant 40*, Jadeja 27*) - 39 overs

15:56 , Luke Baker

Leach stays on. Stokes undeniably backs his players, as a good captain should. He might concede a few runs but if he gets Pant, then it will have been worth it.

A couple of defensive strokes by Pant to start before a sweep is really well stopped by a diving Matty Potts - turned a certain four into a single. Jadeja nudges another one before Pant defends the final ball. A good over form Leach - two from it.

India 150-5 (Pant 39*, Jadeja 26*) - 38 overs

15:52 , Luke Baker

Pant and Jadeja have upped the ante here. A nurdle for two by Jadeja off Broad’s first ball and that’s 150 UP for India.

Next five balls left alone as Broad starts to get a bit of away swing for the first time

SIX! India 148-5 (Pant 39*, Jadeja 24*) - 37 overs

15:48 , Luke Baker

Ben Stokes turns to his spinner, Jack Leach. Pant loves facing spinners, so we’ll see how this goes.

He’s itching to get down the track and finally does off the third ball, quick feet and punched straight for FOUR! That’s followed by a glorious pull that flies beyond the diving fielder for FOUR more.

Then it’s a SIX for Pant! Down the pitch again and pummelled into the stands straight for a maximum. 50 PARTNERSHIP up for India between these two as well.

India 134-5 (Pant 25*, Jadeja 24*) - 36 overs

15:43 , Luke Baker

The runs are starting to flow now as Jadeja strokes a Broad ball that is slightly short through the covers for FOUR!

Good response by Broad who flies one past the outside edge and then concedes no further runs

India 130-5 (Pant 25*, Jadeja 20*) - 35 overs

15:38 , Luke Baker

After the change of balls, Anderson to complete his over. No runs off the final two deliveries.

BALL CHANGE! India 130-5 (Pant 25*, Jadeja 20*) - 34.4 overs

15:36 , Luke Baker

This pair are starting to find the boundary with regularity now. A second beautiful on-drive in as many overs for Jadeja. Barely overpitched by Anderson but he strokes it down the ground for FOUR!

A clip to leg for a single follows before Pant flicks one hard through long-on and Matty Potts does superbly to pursue the ball and flick it back into play before it hits the rope. Three run.

Another single and then the umpires check the ball, it doesn’t go through their little ball-hole gizmo, so will be replaced. Here comes the briefcase of balls!

India 121-5 (Pant 22*, Jadeja 14*) - 34 overs

15:32 , Luke Baker

A lovely on-drive from Jadeja off the first delivery of Broad’s over as he times the ball and jabs it all the way for FOUR! Next delivery is fuller but he digs it out.

A glorious clip through midwicket brings him three before Pant gets in on the act with a stunning cover drive for FOUR! 11 from the over.

India 110-5 (Pant 18*, Jadeja 7*) - 33 overs

15:27 , Luke Baker

Rishabh Pant looks in a bit of discomfort here. The physio is on, giving him some treatment, stretching out Pant’s legs and he’s wincing on the ground.

But he’s back up and ok to continue.

India 110-5 (Pant 18*, Jadeja 7*) - 33 overs

15:24 , Luke Baker

Stokes seems to be fine to continue. No harm done.

Anderson stays on after drinks and thumps Jadeja’s pad but it clearly pitched outside off. The strangled appeal suggests he knows that. Single off the penultimate delivery and that’s it.

NOT OUT! India 109-5 (Pant 18*, Jadeja 5*) - 32 overs

15:17 , Luke Baker

Broad continuing and Pant uses lovely soft hands to drop a single to cover. Four slips in against Jadeja and a jaffa from Broad! Forces the EDGE to slips. Joe Root dives and grabs the ball but he’s not sure if it’s a catch or has fallen just short.

TV replay will determine. Looks like the ball just brushes the grass before he gets his fingers under it. NOT OUT! Brilliant effort by Root but Broad’s wait for a 550th Test wicket goes on. Jadeja single off the final delivery and Ben Stokes gets up holding his back after diving to stop it. Hopefully that’s not too serious.

It’s DRINKS now anyway, so on comes the physio.

India 107-5 (Pant 17*, Jadeja 5*) - 31 overs

15:11 , Luke Baker

Anderson back into the attack - turns out that Jack Leach over was simply to allow a change of ends. He’s coming over the wicket.

Probes away with a couple nipping back but Jadeja leaves a few and defends a couple. A maiden for Jimmy.

VIDEO: England’s post-rain delay wickets

15:09 , Luke Baker

Let’s catch you up on the three wickets England have taken since the rain delay. Two for Matty Potts and one for Jimmy Anderson, featuring a mesmerising catch by Sam Billings.

India 107-5 (Pant 17*, Jadeja 5*) - 30 overs

15:07 , Luke Baker

Stuart Broad comes back into the attack and Anderson departs with his innings figures now reading 3-31.

Just a couple of singles from the over as India move on to 107-5.

India 105-5 (Pant 16*, Jadeja 4*) - 29 overs

15:01 , Luke Baker

Jack Leach on to bowl - a brave move from Ben Stokes, he’s tempting Pant with the spinner. There’s a short leg in (Ollie Pope) as well.

Pant punches to cover where a misfield allows him to run two. 100 UP for India but they didn’t want to be five down. Single to deep midwicket follows before Jadeja dances down the pitch and lofts Leach down the ground for FOUR!

India 98-5 (Pant 13*, Jadeja 0*) - 28 overs

14:57 , Luke Baker

Ravindra Jadeja the new man in and he’s got a job on. The left-hander defends the one ball left of Anderson’s over.

OUT! Shreyas c Billings b Anderson 15. India 98-5

14:55 , Luke Baker

Pant really is a brilliant player to watch in full flow. He out of his crease as if Anderson is a spinner and flat-bats him through mid-off for FOUR!

Single from Pant and then Anderson gets Shreyas. OUT! Short ball, into the body, and it’s tickled down the leg side. Brilliant take by Billings as he dives to his right and takes it one-handed. Superb keeping!

India in all sorts of trouble at 98-5!

India 93-4 (Pant 8*, Shreyas 15*) - 27 overs

14:51 , Luke Baker

Potts steams in to Pant, who is able to punch the ball through mid-off for three runs. And the final ball of the over is then dispatched for FOUR by Shreyas as a long half-volley is cover-driven to the boundary.

India 86-4 (Pant 5*, Shreyas 11*) - 26 overs

14:44 , Luke Baker

Pant pushes Anderson into the leg side for two before taking a leg bye. A bouncer in response by Anderson and Shreyas ducks out of the way but slightly awkwardly - the short ball is a weakness of his.

Singles follow from the final two balls. Five from the over.

India 81-4 (Pant 2*, Shreyas 10*) - 25 overs

14:42 , Luke Baker

Shreyas Iyer the next man in - entering the game at No 6 after Pant leapfrogged him in the order.

Doesn’t look like he wants to hang about... Two to the vacant mid-off area from the first ball before he crunches an overpitched ball for FOUR with a square drive. Later in the over, he throws his bat at a wide half-volley and it flashes away for another FOUR through the off side.

OUT! Kohli b Potts 11. India 71-4

14:37 , Luke Baker

What a start to his Test career Matty Potts has had! An outswinging ball pitched outside off that Kohli tries to leave but the decision is too late, it clips his raised bat and cannons into the stumps. OUT! Clean bowled! Take a bow, Matthew Potts!

India 71-3 (Kohli 11*, Pant 2*) - 24 overs

14:36 , Luke Baker

Pant, as is his wont, skips down the track but Anderson sees him coming, so leaves it short and he inside edges for a single.

Kohli takes another single later in the over before Anderson beats Pant with an inswinger that moves away from the left-handed batter.

India 69-3 (Kohli 10*, Pant 1*) - 23 overs

14:30 , Luke Baker

Rishabh Pant gets bumped up the order to No 5, ahead of Shreyas Iyer. India likely looking for a left-right combination at the crease.

Pant is not known for his defence but is one of the most exciting batters in world cricket, regardless of format, so this could be fireworks.

A couple of dot balls off Potts before Pant works a single. Kohli then flicks one off his hips to the fine-leg boundary for FOUR!

OUT Vihari lbw b Potts 20. India 64-3

14:25 , Luke Baker

Potts stays in the attack, having completed his over, rather than England going to Broad.

Vihari gets a thick outside edge for two off the first ball but then he’s OUT! Potts gets one to nip back, hits Vihari low on the pad, shin high, it looks plumb and the umpire raises the finger! After a brief discussion with Kohli, he decides not to review and trudges off.

India 62-2 (Vihari 18*, Kohli 6*) - 22 overs

14:23 , Luke Baker

Jimmy Anderson continues from the other end, so we’ll get to see the Anderson vs Kohli box-office match-up we’re after.

Vihari takes a single to bring up that contest and takes a quick single after an inswinger squirts off the edge of his bat. Vihari then hits the final delivery of the over beyond the slips but a good chase stops it going for four. Three from the ball, five from the over.

India 57-2 (Vihari 14*, Kohli 5*) - 21 overs

14:19 , Luke Baker

It’s sunny and there’s no more rain scheduled today - we only actually lost about 6 overs during that lengthy delay, so no real damage done.

As a reminder, James Anderson took two Indian wickets before the rain.

Matty Potts steams in to complete his over and the first ball takes a thick inside edge of Virat Kohli’s bat for FOUR! He was so close to chopping on to his stumps but it went to the fine leg boundary instead!

No runs from the rest of the over.

Jos Buttler Q&A: Is new England captain the right man for the job?

13:45 , Luke Baker

Jos Buttler has been entrusted with carrying England’s white-ball sides to greater heights after succeeding World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan.

Here, we take a look at the outstanding issues as Buttler steps up from his position as deputy to take permanent control for the first time in a Twenty20 series against India next week.

Ben Stokes determined to ‘reshape the way Test cricket is played’

13:35 , Luke Baker

England captain Ben Stokes admits he deliberately pushed his bowlers to the limit at Headingley last week as he continues his quest to “reshape the way Test cricket is played”.

A whirlwind approach to batting has been the most obvious aspect of England’s brave new world under Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum, with an average run-rate of 4.54 throughout their 3-0 series win over New Zealand.

But Stokes is eager to keep challenging conventions, including when it comes to the workloads of his bowlers.

Having selected 36-year-old Stuart Broad and 23-year-old rookie Matthew Potts to face India at Edgbaston on Friday – a fourth Test in a little over four weeks – the captain revealed he was eager to see how far he could stretch his seamers.

Stokes took a back seat in Leeds last time out, not bowling at all in the first innings and sending down just four overs in the second. That left Potts to pick up 51 overs in the match, while Broad’s share of 47 was his highest for five years.

No play - next inspection at 1.45pm

13:22 , Luke Baker

The umpires have looked at the pitch and there’s still too much standing water and dangerous areas to resume play. The next inspection will now be at 1.45pm

Harry Brook named in England’s squads for Twenty20 and ODI series against India

12:59 , Luke Baker

Some news away from the Test side - where England have named their T20 and ODI squad for the upcoming series against India, where Jos Buttler starts his role as full-time captain.

In-form Yorkshire batter Harry Brook has been included, while Matt Parkinson has also been drafted in as fellow leg-spinner Adil Rashid will miss both series after being given permission by the England and Wales Cricket Board to make The Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.

Uncapped seamer Richard Gleeson is included for the T20 series, while Test stars Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root are part of the ODI group.

Inspection at 1.15pm

12:55 , Luke Baker

The next inspection is scheduled for around 1.15pm, so hopefully that will shed some more light on a resumption time.

Resumption delayed

12:51 , Luke Baker

Sadly we won’t be resuming at 12.48pm, it’s still raining at Edgbaston - albeit not as heavily as before. We’ll keep you updated for a potential start time.

Potential resumption at 12.48pm

Lunch was officially taken at 12.08pm, so if the rain subsides then 12.48pm will be the time we’re back underway.

Rain stops play

12:27 , Luke Baker

Rain, rain go away.

Early lunch taken

12:18 , Luke Baker

As suspected, they’ve taken an early lunch at Headingley. Hopefully the rain clears and we can resume in 40 minutes’ time.

Looks like there’s just showers in the local area rather than a sustained downpour, so fingers crossed.

VIDEO: Anderson takes second wicket of the morning

12:15 , Luke Baker

Here’s Jimmy Anderson’s second wicket, again caught by Zak Crawley in the slips. A jaffa from Jimmy.

Rain stops play! India 53-2

12:10 , Luke Baker

Booooo - that’s no fun. The rain starts to come down and after one ball of Potts’ latest over, the players head off. We were 20 minutes from lunch, so they may take an early lunch.

India 53-2 with Jimmy Anderson taking both wickets, both caught by Zak Crawley in the slips. Openers Gill and Pujara the men dismissed.

India 53-2 (Vihari 14*, Kohli 1*) - 20 overs

12:07 , Luke Baker

Right, settle in. Anderson vs Kohli! This will be box office.

Kohli leaves the first one and the second inswinger darts back in but Kohli confidently leaves again. That was close! A couple more watchful leaves before he defends a straighter one.

Final delivery pushed into the off side for one.

India 52-2 (Vihari 14*, Kohli 0*) - 19 overs

12:03 , Luke Baker

Pujara removes, so respite with the next batter in? Nope. It’s only Virat Kohli.

Kohli isn’t in great nick at the moment to be honest but class is permanent. Anderson vs Kohli will be box office but we’ve got a Potts over first and Vihari is on strike.

Potts getting some nip and swing, he’s such an impressive young bowler. He strays to leg with the penultimate delivery, it’s flicked fine by Vihari and Jack Leach’s slide can’t prevent FOUR runs. That’s the 50 UP for India as well! Two then taken off the final ball

OUT! Pujara c Crawley b Anderson 13. India 46-2

11:58 , Luke Baker

Anderson hitting the seam hard here and tying up the Indian batters. Inswinger for Anderson is then flicked to leg for one.

OUT! Final delivery of the over, movement away, Pujara edges it and this time Crawley makes no mistake! Safely caught and immediate redemption.

DROPPED! India 45-1 (Pujara 13*, Vihari 7*) - 17 overs

11:54 , Luke Baker

No-ball from Potts as he goes too short. Ooooh, that’s a belter though - in-between length to draw Vihari forward then beat him off the seam.

DROPPED! Final ball of the over - genuine edge from Vihari, it wobbles but into Crawley’s right hand. It hits it hard and he can’t hold on. It rolls away for a single

India 43-1 (Pujara 13*, Vihari 6*) - 16 overs

11:48 , Luke Baker

Anderson back into the attack in place of Broad, who looked like he was struggling slightly in that seventh over. Can Jimmy take a wicket and bring the great Virat Kohli to the crease?

Varying the length slightly to keep Pujara on his toes but well defended. A maiden for Anderson though to build the pressure.

India 43-1 (Pujara 13*, Vihari 6*) - 15 overs

11:44 , Luke Baker

More seam movement for Potts as one nips back in to Vihari but there’s no inside edge, just thigh pad on the way through. Potts bowling a good line here.

EDGE from Vihari off the next ball as one stays low but it’s well short of the slips. Good soft hand. A maiden.

REVIEW - NOT OUT! India 43-1 (Pujara 13*, Vihari 6*) - 14 overs

11:40 , Luke Baker

Broad into his seventh over as play resumes after drinks.

A first-ball single and then Pujara slams a cut shot for FOUR! Broad down to 79mph there - is he getting tired.

Next ball and he’s OUT! Broad gets one to move back in, Pujara snicks it and Billings catches - he’s gone! They call for a DRS REVIEW though.

Ultra Edge shows no inside edge, the ball nicked off the thigh pad, which was the sound, so Pujara gets a reprieve

VIDEO: Jimmy Anderson takes England’s first wicket of the day

11:36 , Luke Baker

Just one wicket in the opening half session and it’s Jimmy Anderson who got Shubman Gill to edge to slip.

India 38-1 (Pujara 9*, Vihari 5*) - 13 overs

11:30 , Luke Baker

The slip cordon is absolutely jam-packed for Potts but he can’t coax an edge. A single and a leg bye off the over.

And that’s DRINKS! A wicket for England but otherwise solid from India.

India 36-1 (Pujara 8*, Vihari 5*) - 12 overs

11:27 , Luke Baker

Broad continues and there’s almost a run-out! Vihari pushes one slightly wide of mid-on, the call is late, Pujara starts late, and Anderson goes for Pujara’s end. Pujara dives, but that wouldn’t have been enough to save him had Anderson hit,

A safer single to leg off the next ball.

India 34-1 (Pujara 7*, Vihari 4*) - 11 overs

11:22 , Luke Baker

Matty Potts into the attack after Anderson’s impressive spell. Figures of 5-1-13-1.

Slightly short of a length from Potts and Vihari nicely punches it wide of cover for two. A leg bye from the following ball is the only other damage done. Potts also beats Pujara outside off with the penultimate ball.

India 31-1 (Pujara 7*, Vihari 2*) - 10 overs

11:16 , Luke Baker

Pujara defends well from Broad with little pushes into the off side. A brave, but good, leave from the fourth ball and Broad then completes a maiden.

India 31-1 (Pujara 7*, Vihari 2*) - 9 overs

11:12 , Luke Baker

Pujara gets his bat down and squirts a single from Anderson’s first ball before Vihari watchfully leaves the next five alone outside off. Perhaps Jimmy will start coming a little straighter to make him play

India 30-1 (Pujara 6*, Vihari 2*) - 8 overs

11:08 , Luke Baker

Broad has four slips and a leg gully for Pujara. He takes a single off the third ball and Vihari is then beaten outside off by the first ball he faces from Broad, before the final delivery splits him in half as well. Promising for England.

India 29-1 (Pujara 5*, Vihari 2*) - 7 overs

11:03 , Luke Baker

Hanuma Vihari the man in at No 3 and an APPEAL for lbw off the first ball. Too high though and the umpire has no interest.

Next ball hits the pads again but no appeal, before he nudges one into the off side for two to get off the mark. Final delivery beats the bat to the outside and goes through to Billings. Good over from Anderson.

OUT! Gill c Crawley b Anderson 17. India 27-1

11:00 , Luke Baker

Single off the first ball by Pujara and Anderson then gets the breakthrough! One nips away and Gill edges it to slip where Zak Crawley safely pouches it. He’s OUT for 17 and was looking in good touch.

Important breakthrough for England.

India 26-0 (Gill 17*, Pujara 4*) - 6 overs

10:57 , Luke Baker

Gill looks in lovely touch here as Broad tries a short ball but he dismissively pulls it away for FOUR! Two balls later he opens the face of the bat, soft hands and guides the ball wide of the slips for another FOUR to the gully boundary.

Eight from the over.

India 18-0 (Gill 9*, Pujara 4*) - 5 overs

10:54 , Luke Baker

Stunning shot from Gill off the first ball of Anderson’s over as he leans into it and strokes the ball through the vacant mid-off area for FOUR!

A bit of nip off the seam next ball for Anderson and after a single, the Englishman beats Pujara with one that nips away

India 13-0 (Gill 4*, Pujara 4*) - 4 overs

10:48 , Luke Baker

Broad, playing his fourth Test in a row - it’s a while since he’s done that - is in for his second over.

A gorgeous straight punch down the ground from Pujara goes away for FOUR! Two off the next ball as it goes down to fine leg for two leg-byes - question over whether he played a shot but the umpires determine that he did, so the runs stand.

India 7-0 (Gill 4*, Pujara 0*) - 3 overs

10:44 , Luke Baker

Anderson into Gill and that’s an EDGE! But it bounces just short of the slips - soft enough hands from Gill.

Two leg-byes as the inswinger beats the bat, deflects off Gill and beats Billings. That’s the only runs from the over.
