England vs Switzerland result: Gareth Southgate pleased with Three Lions' response in Nations League play-off

Gareth Southgate was pleased with his side's response after England beat Switzerland in a penalty shootout to finish third in the Uefa Nations League.

The Three Lions were the better side over the 90 minutes and in extra-time but wasteful finishing saw them forced to spot kicks.

Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford then proved the hero scoring and then saving from 12 yards to ensure they ended their trip to Portugal on a high note.

The result came just three days after the disappointment of defeat to the Netherlands in the semi-final on Thursday and Southgate was pleased with how his team bounced back on Sunday.

“It was important that we responded today with a high-level of performance,” he said.

“And the players adapted really well because we changed the shape and they carried it out really well.

“We should’ve won the game, with the opportunities we created and the number of times we hit the woodwork so it was a good response.

“We prepared well for that eventuality [penalties] and talked to the players about it three weeks ago, as we knew that in a competition like this, it could happen.

“So it’s great for all of the staff when that hard work comes to fruition.”
