England 69-3 Tonga LIVE! Autumn Nations Series 2021 rugby match stream, latest score and updates today

England vs Tonga - LIVE!

There will be a full house at Twickenham for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic began as England start their autumn international campaign against Tonga this afternoon.

Eddie Jones’ side are beginning the build towards the next World Cup in France in two years’ time and will be confident of putting on a show for the returning masses against a Tonga side who were hammered by Scotland last weekend.

However, with tougher tests against Australia and South Africa to come this month, the England boss will want to see his side looking sharp as they return to something much closer to full-strength, having been without his British & Irish Lions stars through the summer.

Things haven’t gone smoothly in the build-up, however, with a Covid scare in the camp and captain Owen Farrell subsequently testing positive.

May: England feared Tonga game would be off over Covid-19 outbreak

‘Really exciting’ - Lawes looks ahead to new era with England as Tonga await

Returning George has key chance to prove England worth in Tonga clash

Key Points

  • TRY! Smith dives over to delight crowd

  • TRY! George again from the back of maul

  • RED CARD! Fine off for elbow on Smith

  • TRY! May just about stretches far enough

  • TRY! Radwan gives England perfect start

FULL-TIME: England 69-3 Tonga

17:24 , Matt Verri

Aaaaaaand breathe.

Four tries in the last ten minutes for England, as they made the most of their man advantage after Fine was shown red.

It’s 11 tries in the match. Jones will be delighted, the full house at Twickenham are delighted, and it’s a job well done.

Bigger tests ahead, but this is certainly one to enjoy.

TRY! England 69-3 Tonga | Alex Mitchell 80'

17:21 , Matt Verri

It is absolute chaos at Twickenham!

Alex Mitchell has a try on debut, and this once will count.

Smith is involved, as usual, and Radwan bursts away. His pace is a bit loose, but Mitchell collects, kicks it along, and touches down.

Smith’s conversion is the last action of the match.

TRY! England 62-3 Tonga | Jamie Blamire 78'

17:19 , Matt Verri

It’s ten now!

Smith is just too good for this tired Tonga defence. Lovely dummy gives him to space to break through, and it’s a simple pass to Blamire who can trot over for a try seven minutes after coming on. Conversion is good, England running riot.

TR..... NO!

17:16 , Matt Verri

75 mins: England think they have another try, but Alex Mitchell is denied. Replays show he was pretty comfortably offside.

They’ll have to be content with nine tries... for now.

Simon Collings at Twickenham

17:14 , Matt Verri

And that’s the loudest cheer of the afternoon as boy wonder Marcus Smith goes over. This has all gone perfectly to plan for Eddie Jones. A job well done.

TRY! England 55-3 Tonga | Marcus Smith 73'

17:13 , Matt Verri

The floodgates are open now!

Henry Slade picks it up in the England 22, cuts inside and he’s away. He runs, and runs, and runs... Smith runs a great line, Slade feeds him, and the fly-half is away to dive over under the posts.

He adds the extras to his own try.

Try! England 48-3 Tonga | Jamie George 70’

17:11 , Matt Verri

Tonga have no answer. George just sits on the back of the maul, strolls forward as his teammates in front do the hard work, and then goes over with minimal fuss. He joins May and Youngs with two tries in the match.

That’s his last involvement too, as George is brought off.

Marcus Smith makes it two from two conversions.

17:09 , Matt Verri

70 mins: Yet another penalty for England, just outside the 5m line.

Smith pokes it into touch, and here comes the driving maul once again...

RED CARD - Viliami Fine 69’

17:07 , Matt Verri

Viliami Fine with the initial high tackle on Radwan, and he then throws an elbow into the face of Marcus Smith on the ground.

Reckless and dangerous from Fine, and that’s his match over. Going to be a really long 10 minutes for Tonga now.

17:05 , Matt Verri

68 mins: Advantage England for a high tackle, and we’ll come back for that penalty.

TMO tells the referee to pause the game though... sounds like there’s a couple of incidents to have a look at.

17:03 , Matt Verri

67 mins: Afusipa Taumoepeau does well for his side, and he wins a penalty at the breakdown.

Will Stuart and Alex Mitchell on for England now, who will be looking to add to the scoreboard in the remaining 13 minutes.

17:01 , Matt Verri

65 mins: It comes to nothing for England, and Tonga win the scrum.

But England have the put-in now... and it’s a penalty. The referee warns the new-look Tonga front-row, who have been on for about seven minutes.

16:58 , Matt Verri

63 mins: It’s very nearly an eighth try for Tonga, who are looking ragged at best.

Tom Curry with good feet and quick hands finds Alex Dombrandt, who opts to pass it when he probably should have bundled his way over himself.

The ball hits the post, ricochets away, and Tonga survive for now.

But it’s a scrum for England on the 5m line now, the pressure is relentless.

Try! England 41-3 Tonga | Jonny May 60’

16:55 , Matt Verri

That man again!

It’s a lovely reverse pass from Youngs to May, who looked to have been hauled down just short of the line.

But he manages to just stretch out his arm and place the ball down, and that’s his second try.

Marcus Smith will be grateful, as he has as simple a conversion as he could wish.

16:51 , Matt Verri

58 mins: Great work from Curry to win a penalty at the breakdown.

England waste no time, and they’re off attacking again. It comes wide to Jonny May in so much space... he can’t quite beat Veainu though, and his attempt at the pass inside does not reach a red shirt.

Mark Atkinson comes on for England, replacing Tuilagi who had some really bright moments.

16:47 , Matt Verri

56 mins: Tonga deep in the England 22... they haven’t been here for every often.

They’re not there for much longer either, as the England defence win a penalty. They celebrate that with huge enthusiasm.

Conversion missed

16:45 , Matt Verri

Slade hits the post, he hasn’t had much luck from a kicking perspective today.

Smith on for Furbank then. Safe to say the crowd approved of that...

Simon Collings at Twickenham

16:43 , Matt Verri

A huge roar from the crowd as finally they get a chance to see Marcus Smith. He’s got 30 minutes against a tired Tonga team...

Try! England 34-3 Tonga | Ben Youngs 51'

16:43 , Matt Verri

But Tonga don’t do a very good job of it!

Youngs is so alert at the scrum, and he rips the ball away before sprinting into the empty space and diving over for his second try of the match.

A simple enough finish in the end, but it was great work from the scrum-half.

16:41 , Matt Verri

50 mins: Tonga lineout in England’s half... it’s well stolen, and Itoje gets his hands on the ball.

But it’s a knock-on from May as England try to build some pressure again, and Tonga will be able to kill a few more seconds with another scrum.

16:39 , Matt Verri

47 mins: England knock-on, and that will be a scrum for Tonga after a messy couple of minutes.

Eddie Jones’ side ran riot in the first-half with an extra man - Tonga’s challenge is to try and keep it tight for the next 10 minutes.

Yellow card | Fifita 45’

16:37 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Really good from Steward. He’s alert to mop up a Tonga kick into space, and then chases his own kick well to force Morath into rushing his kick into touch.

Fifita almost intercepts a pass out wide, but the officials are checking for a deliberate knock-on.

And they’ve decided it was just that... yellow card for Fifita.

16:33 , Matt Verri

43 mins: George and England make a bit of a mess of it though, and it’s a Tonga scrum. Breathless opening to the half from England, but no points to show for it.

16:32 , Matt Verri

42 mins: It’s a crazy start to the second-half! Tuilagi is just leaving bodies in his wake as he bulldozes up the pitch. All came from good hands from Slade.

Morath does just about enough to bring down Tuilagi.

Penalty for a late tackle though, and England have kicked to the 5m line for an attacking lineout.

Back underway

16:30 , Matt Verri

Second-half underway at Twickenham.

Alex Dombrandt is on, replacing Sam Underhill who needed treatment just before the break.

More to come

16:28 , Matt Verri

Eddie Jones will be hoping for his side to be ruthless in the second-half and rack up the tries, but he’ll also be looking to utilise the players on the bench.

This Twickenham crowd will be desperate for Marcus Smith to get some minutes this afternoon.

George making the most of his opportunity

16:22 , Matt Verri

16:19 , Matt Verri

England were looking good enough when it was 15 against 15, but once Kata was sent to the sin-bin for taking out May in the air, Tonga really struggled.

Radwan, George, Itoje, May, and Youngs with the tries. You would imagine that list will be added to in the second period, perhaps significantly too.

Simon Collings at Twickenham

16:16 , Matt Verri

England in complete control here and it’s really just a question of many they score in the second half.

Conversion missed

16:14 , Matt Verri

Tricky angle for the left foot of Slade... and it proves too tricky.

That will be the last action of the half. England go in at the break 29-3 to the good.

Try! England 29-3 Tonga | Ben Youngs 40'

16:14 , Matt Verri

Ben Youngs gets himself a try on the verge of half-time.

Lineout is good again from England, George switches it down the blindside, and Youngs decides to ignore May to his left.

He has the speed and power himself, and goes over out wide.

16:12 , Matt Verri

39 mins: Penalty England on halfway, but a delay in proceedings as Sam Underhill gets some attention.

Looks like he’ll be ok to continue for now though, and Slade gets his side back into the Tonga 22.

16:10 , Matt Verri

38 mins: It was a knock-on from Veainu after that tackle, so England have the scrum on their 5m line.

Tonga put everything in to it, but they’re penalised for spinning the scrum and England will clear their lines.

Simon Collings at Twickenham

16:08 , Matt Verri

That’s up there with one of the best try-saving tackles you’ll see. Lawes came from absolutely nowhere to stop that. Astonishing.

16:07 , Matt Verri

Telusa Veainu intercepts Slade’s pass in his own 22, and then he runs the length of the pitch.

He turns Steward inside out, and he looks certain to go over for a stunning solo try.

But Courtney Lawes has other ideas, comes flying in and knocks the ball away just inches away from the tryline. Brilliant rugby all-round!

Try! England 24-3 Tonga | Maro Itoje 33’

16:04 , Matt Verri

And England take full advantage within a minute!

Genge does brilliantly to set it up with a strong carry and a nice offload, and they can’t stop Itoje as he falls over the line to make it four tries for England.

Slade adds the extras, a nice simple one for him at last.

YELLOW CARD - Solomone Kata 32'

16:02 , Matt Verri

Unsurprisingly Kata is indeed punished, and Tonga will be down to 14 for the next ten minutes.

As if it wasn’t tough enough...

16:00 , Matt Verri

31 mins: This could be about to get worse for Tonga.

May claims the ball in the air, and Solomone Kata takes him out. It’s a really heavy landing for the England winger.

Officials having a look at it now...

Conversion! England 17-3 Tonga | Henry Slade

15:58 , Matt Verri

Slade’s third attempt of the match, and this time he makes it. Another tight angle... his teammates haven’t made it easy for him so far!

Simon Collings at Twickenham

15:57 , Matt Verri

A nice try from England and Furbank was at the heart of it. He kicked off the move down the right before switching it left later on. Given he’s a late call-up, he’s done well at fly-half.

Try! England 15-3 Tonga | Jonny May 29’

15:57 , Matt Verri

Jonny May gets England’s third try!

Tuilagi so powerful on the left, and then England come back to the other side of the pitch. George to Steward, who juggles it a bit before passing it wide to May, who runs in for a simple finish.

15:55 , Matt Verri

Slade too powerful for the Tonga defence, as it bursts through two tackles. He tries the offload out the back of the hand, but Tuilagi can’t quite gather.

Tuilagi is off again shortly after though, after great hands from Curry and Furbank. It’s recycled, and England are back in the Tonga 22 and looking dangerous.

15:52 , Matt Verri

25 mins: Let off for Tonga though, as Genge and Sinckler are too far in front at the lineout as they lift Itoje and the referee gives the penalty.

15:51 , Matt Verri

23 mins: Morath clears from his own 22 and gets Tonga up to the halfway line. He’s not happy with how Steward closed him down, but nothing doing there.

Our first real look at Furbank of the match, and it’s wonderful from the fly-half. Breaks through the tackles and he’s away. Support can’t get up to him quick enough though.

He’s got England a penalty though, Tonga penalised for a high tackle. Kick to touch again...

Penalty! England 10-3 | Sonatane Takulua 19’

15:48 , Matt Verri

After his early sighter, Takulua makes no mistake this time and Tonga are on the board.

20 minutes gone at Twickenham - there’s been good ambition from England in terms of kicking for touch, but a couple of penalties against them have stalled the momentum.

Penalty missed

15:45 , Matt Verri

17 mins: Tonga win the penalty, and they will go for the posts.

Sonatane Takulua steps up... and it’s well wide. England will be wary of ill-discipline giving Tonga easy points and a way into this match.

Conversion missed

15:42 , Matt Verri

First conversion missed left, second conversion missed right.

Overcorrection from Slade, but they were both tough kicks. Despite those two missed, Eddie Jones will be delighted with England’s start.

TRY! England 10-0 | Jamie George 13’

15:41 , Matt Verri

Lineout is good, maul is even better, and it’s a second try for England.

It’s George who comes off the back of it and smashes his way over the tryline, pretty much on exactly the same blades of grass as Radwan did ten minutes earlier.

15:39 , Matt Verri

12 mins: England penalty and they decide to kick for touch. Slade does a brilliant job of it too, lineout on the 5m line.

George gets himself to the back of the maul, but again it doesn’t really go anywhere.

Another penalty for England as the Tongans don’t roll away. Back to touch we go.

15:37 , Matt Verri

10 mins: Tonga with their first real possession of the match, and some territory in the England half.

Vailanu with smart work at the breakdown to burst through the red shirts, but he makes a mess of the pass and the danger is averted.

15:35 , Matt Verri

7 mins: Some respite for Tonga, and it comes in the form of a scrum which is a messy affair.

England will want to keep the game moving and play their rugby with good intensity this afternoon.

Simon Collings at Twickenham

15:33 , Matt Verri

Well, that didn’t take long. Lovely feet from Radwan there, who shows why he has been tearing up the Premiership this season.

Conversion missed

15:31 , Matt Verri

Henry Slade takes the conversion, and just pulls it wide of the post.

Still, that’s a pretty impressive start from England, and already you feel it will be a long afternoon for those Tonga players.

TRY! England 5-0 | Adam Radwan 3'

15:30 , Matt Verri

Well that didn’t take long!

Tonga were stretched from the off. Jonny May wasn’t far from going over on the left wing, but it eventually came out to the right and Adam Radwan bundles his way over. Brilliant start.

15:28 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Morath with a really scrappy kick from inside the Tonga 22, and England will have a lineout.

Itoje claims - the maul fails to make much ground but it’s worked out wide and England already look really dangerous.

15:26 , Matt Verri

Tonga in white, England in red...

Kurt Morath gets the match underway.

Simon Collings at Twickenham

15:25 , Matt Verri

A big afternoon for plenty of this England side, but no more so than the back three.

Radwan and Steward have the chance to lay a marker down and make the shirts theirs.

It’s nearly time

15:23 , Matt Verri

Anthems done, as tuneful as ever from both sets of players.

Time for the Sipu Tau from Tonga, and then kick-off will finally be upon us.

Here they come...

15:19 , Matt Verri

The Tonga side out onto the pitch first, as the music blares out around the stadium.

It’s a bit of a lonely experience for those Tonga players... they’ve been on the pitch for a few minutes and still no sign of the England team.

Here they come now, and they receive a brilliant ovation from the crowd.

Ten minutes to go...

15:16 , Matt Verri

Slightly delayed kick-off means we are not quite underway yet.

But the teams are getting ready to come out, with a full Twickenham crowd waiting in anticipation.

Eddie Jones on Courtney Lawes as captain

15:07 , Matt Verri

“He’s a very respected member of the team . He’s got a couple of good deputies in Genge and Curry - they’ll make sure he doesn’t fall asleep so he should be alright.”

Match delayed

14:51 , Matt Verri

Kick-off has been delayed 10 minutes at Twickenham, due to a late team arrival.

Match now due to get underway in about 35 minutes, at 3:25pm GMT.

Eddie Jones on George Furbank

14:49 , Matt Verri

George Furbank in for Owen Farrell at fly-half for England this afternoon then. Here’s what Eddie Jones has had to say about him:

“He’s a very good full-back, we’ve seen him play at 10 for Northampton very well.

“He’s got a nice feel for the game, he’s a physical defender and he’ll bring a lot of smarts to that position.”

Simon Collings at Twickenham

14:44 , Matt Verri

Tonga to improve?

14:22 , Matt Verri

Tonga were in action at Murrayfield last weekend, where they fell to a heavy 60-14 to a Scottish side without the likes of Stuart Hogg, Duhan van der Merwe, and Finn Russell.

They’ve made nine changes though to that side, and will be looking for a much-improved showing. A reminder of their team this afternoon...

Tonga XV: Veainu; W Fifita, Hingano, Taumoepeau, Kata; Morath, Takulua (capt); Fisi’ihoi, Ngauamo, Tameifuna, H Fifita, Halaifonua, Timani, Kafatolu, Vailanu.

Replacements: Maile, Uhila, Fia, Funaki, Havili, Fukofuka, Faiva, Fine.

Head-to-head record

14:15 , Malik Ouzia

England wins: 3

Tonga wins: 0

Draws: 0

Last meeting: England 35-3 Tonga (World Cup, 22/9/2019)

Standard Sport prediction

14:03 , Malik Ouzia

England should really run out comfortable winners here and the question is not if they win, but by how many points.

The back three of Adam Radwan, Freddie Steward and Jonny May has so much pace and they, in particular, will be hungry for tries.

The fact England are playing in front of 80,000 fans should also see them raise their level as Jones will want his side to put on a show.

A victory by 50 points seems likely.

Confirmed: Farrell out, Furbank in

13:55 , Malik Ouzia

England have confirmed that Owen Farrell is not available this afternoon because of that positive Covid test so George Furbank starts at No10, while Mark Atkinson steps up onto the bench.

Courtney Lawes will captain the side in Farrell’s absence.

England team news

13:40 , Malik Ouzia

There is no place for Smith’s great mate and Quins colleague Alex Dombrandt in the starting XV, with Tom Curry named at No8 in an experienced back row, alongside Courtney Lawes and Sam Underhill.

Curry, who emerged as a flanker, has four starts for England at No8, but none since March 2020.

However, young full-back Freddie Steward was passed fit to start and goes into an electric back three with Jonny May and Adam Radwan.

Jamie George, who was initially left out of the squad alongside other experienced players like the Vunipola brothers and George Ford, starts at hooker. George earned a reprieve when Luke Cowan-Dickie went down injured.

Smith to start if Farrell out?

13:30 , Malik Ouzia

Harlequins star Marcus Smith could be promoted to the starting XV if Farrell is absent, while George Furbank is another fly-half candidate.

Smith was one of a number of players blooded by Jones in the summer internationals against USA and Canada, and he immediately received a call-up to the Lions tour of South Africa, following a stunning season in Harlequins’ Premiership-winning side.

He is considered a central part of Jones’ rebuild, but his week has been disrupted by a knock, and he only made the bench, with Farrell initially chosen to captain the side from fly-half in an experienced midfield, alongside Manu Tuilagi and Henry Slade.

How to watch

13:20 , Malik Ouzia

Live stream: England vs Tonga will be broadcast live on Amazon Prime Video, with coverage beginning at 2:30pm.

England team news: Farrell a major doubt with Covid

13:14 , Malik Ouzia

England’s preparations for today’s game were thrown into chaos when captain Owen Farrell tested positive for Covid-19 on the eve of the fixture.

The Saracens star has entered isolation and will undergo further lateral flow and PCR tests, with a member of England’s support staff initially testing positive on Thursday.

England have said they will delay confirming their starting XV until 1:45pm, to see whether there’s any chance he can play.

Good afternoon!
