The tournament got underway yesterday, when the hosts were roundly beaten by Ecuador to kick off and a hectic 29 days of football building up to the final in Lusail on December 18.
England get their latest bid for a first major success since 1966 up and running this afternoon when they face Iran in Group B, before the focus turns to the USA four days later.
The Three Lions faced the USA at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa when Fabio Capello was in charged, with it finishing in a 1-1 draw as Rob Green had a moment to forget in goal when letting Clint Dempsey’s speculative effort beat him.
As at the Euros in 2016, England face Wales in the group stage. Daniel Sturridge struck a stoppage-time winner in Lens that day, but it was Wales who still topped the group.
England will be hoping to avoid a repeat of that, as Gareth Southgate’s side target top spot in Group B to set up a potential last-16 match against Senegal.
