England XI vs Romania: Team news, starting lineup, squad, injury latest for Euro 2020 warm-up friendly
Gareth Southgate has one more game to prepare England before the European Championship kicks off, with Romania up next for the Three Lions on Sunday.
England beat Austria 1-0 at the Riverside Stadium on Wednesday night, and were given a good work-out as a makeshift XI struggled to impose themselves on the game.
Bukayo Saka’s first senior international goal won the friendly for England, but the result was marred by an injury to Trent Alexander-Arnold which has ended the Liverpool defender’s hopes of featuring at the Euros.
There had been much talk of Alexander-Arnold joining three other right-backs in Southgate’s 26-man squad, but the manager will now have to select a replacement for the tournament.
Southgate says he will wait until after this evening’s friendly against Romania until naming the lucky player to get a late call-up, but much could depend on whether the result of his squad comes through this final game unscathed.
Harry Maguire remains a serious doubt for England’s opening group-stage game against Croatia, meaning one of Tryone Mings or Conor Coady could partner John Stones at the back for the start of the Euros - though Southgate could be tempted to switch to a back three if the Manchester United captain is out.
With Chelsea and Manchester City players still getting up to speed after being given a break following their Champions League Final exertions, there are more minutes for the likes of James Ward-Prowse, Ben White and Ben Godfrey, all of whom are not actually in the tournament squad.
Marcus Rashford starts after a short break following Man United’s Europa League Final defeat to Villarreal, and Jadon Sancho is back after missing the Austria game.
Jordan Henderson trained with the England squad on Saturday and should get minutes off the bench.
